WASHINGTON: The United States has told France that Israel could strike Iran without US military support but the operation might not be successful, according to a leaked document published.

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates gave his assessment at a meeting on February 8 in Paris with former French defense minister Herve Morin, according to a secret summary of the session that was posted on WikiLeaks, part of a massive document dump of classified cables.

Asked by Morin if Israel had the capability to strike Iran without US assistance, Gates "responded that he didn't know if they would be successful, but that Israel could carry out the operation," it said.

But Gates downplayed the value of any military operation against Iran, according to the document.

The American defense secretary told Morin that he "believed a conventional strike by any nation would only delay Iranian plans by one to three years, while unifying the Iranian people to be forever embittered against the attacker," it said.

Discretion is the better part of valour. Your military options on striking Iran's nuclear facilities are extremely limited and your leadership knows this, all bravado aside.

There is no military solution for stopping Iran's nuclear program. Their sites are dispersed and while could be damaged and delayed from producing, this would be a temporary setback.

I, for one, feel that had Israel had the opportunity to do something about Iran's facilities, she would have exercised this a long time ago (given Syria and Iraq were nowhere close to attaining enrichment and yet IDF attacked them). Here the ship has already sailed and its no longer one ship, its multiple facilities and many thousands of scientists and engineers running the program in contrast to the small Iraqi and Syrian programs.

All in all, some understanding has to be reached in the region with regards to the nuclear capability. Maybe Israel and Iran should talk to each other for a start using back-channel diplomacy.

First of all Iran is not Iraq, which was occupied by US easily.... If attacked, Iran will use there full force against Israel....

Secondly, these wars and the current conditions of muslims in this world, were told by Holy Prophet (SA) 1400 years ago, that are coming true today... So these can be a so called "Religious Competition" for you, but not for the Muslims... Because all that Holy Prophet (SA) said is truth and will happen Insha Allah.....

I think Russia is getting involved in Iran again and will help them accelerate their plan.

One thing I agree with you is that the next president will take over in 2012 and it will not be Obama. obama was endorsed by Hamas and sides with the terrorist organizations against Isreal. So Isreal could attack after 2012 after the next president take power and give Isreal the blessing to attack Iran.
