Israel has confronted Palestinians with financial sanctions following the singing of unity deal between the rival Palestinian factions of Fatah and Hamas.

On Sunday, Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said he had suspended transfer of USD 89 million to the Palestinian Authority (PA), arguing that the funds would find their way to Hamas, the Associated Press reported.

The money is comprised of the custom fees -- which Israel collects because it does not allow Palestinians to control the borders -- and the tax money, which is entitled to the PA.

The Fatah party, which dominates the PA, joined Hamas in signing the deal in the Egyptian capital, Cairo on Wednesday. In line with the pact, the two agreed to form an interim unity government and hold presidential and legislative elections within a year.

Steinitz said the PA's acting Chief Mahmoud Abbas and its acting Prime Minister Salam Feyadh "must prove that these funds will not go into a communal fund in the government they want to form with Hamas."

“We want it established that there will be two separate funds," he said.

Israeli Minister of Military Affairs Ehud Barak has called on the United Nations to force some clause into the deal, including one, which obliges Hamas to recognize Israel.

Hamas says by making such proposals Israel is attempting to 'blackmail' the movement. Feyadh has also said the Tel Aviv threats are ineffective on the deal.

This is what happened when you don't have weapons to defend yourself, you are beholden to other and constant being extorted. Nothing different than a gangster demanding protection money.
