Islam came to India with the Arab merchants and traders on the Malabar Coast in the 7th century. Islam arrived in north India in the 12th century and has since become a part of India's religious and cultural heritage.[5] Over the years, there has been significant integration of Hindu and Muslim cultures across India[6][7] and the Muslims have played a prominent role in India's economic rise and cultural influence.Islam in India - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But it wasn't a major religion because indians were very introverted type of people....in the sense that we engaged with religion from 'dharmic' backgrounds only.
For ex: We debated with the buddists and the jains but never picked up the sword to convert them but we didn't debated a lot with the muslim because at that time there logical system was nowhere close to india ,we used to call them 'mleccha'. It means outsiders/barbarians.
Similarly the chinese were also very advanced back then they call their country Zhonggou which literally means the middle kingdom.
Our religious system was advanced and the arabs came nowhere near us.

Nyaya - A logical system predating the greeks
Vedanta
Upanishads etc

Early islam was spread by the sword with millions killed in genocides.Taimur, babur, ghauri they all were 'malecchas' or barbarians

"In every place to which some particular holiness is ascribed, the Hindus construct ponds intended for the ablutions. In this they have attained to a very degree of art, so that our people (the Muslims), when they see them, wonder at them, and are unable to describe them, much less to construct anything like them"

" ....theological topics at the utmost they fight with words, but they will never stake their soul or body or their property on religious controversy."
