ISIL and the Enslavement of Women

The ruthless bloodshed and devastation created by ISIL has not only killed innocent people, forced displacement, but has also brought back injustices against women that were long abandoned and banned. It is true when they say the worse victims of war are women and children. ISIL is not only capturing and enslaving women of all ages – some young enough to be considered children- but are selling them as commodities. To make matters worse, they justify their actions by a convoluted interpretation of the Islamic religion. ISIL claims that enslaving women and girls of the “enemy as sex-slaves is established in the Quran and anyone criticizing their actions would be criticizing Islam. Is there any truth to their claims? ”Slavery, murder, human trafficking, terror, these are the foundations upon which they want to build an Islamic Caliphate?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends”. Well we are no longer silent. Operation Inherent Resolve is sign of our continued commitment to the region and to our partners in the region in dismantling and destroying ISIL. Barbaric violent groups of this sort need to be eradicated so that they can no longer hijack a religion nor terrorize and harm defenseless people.
