What's new

Is this true that Government has tax all the remittance in the new budget?

. .
Seems to be based on this 1 guys tweet.

On what basis could they tax money I send to you?

The same basis they can tax a personal use item, say a cellphone, that you have paid for, including tax, and then used for years.

I suppose so. Although doesn't that tax only apply if you stay longer than x days? Can't remember what X is.

If accurate, this policy will likely incentivize people to send money through backchannels (unless the gov't starts criminalizing the backchannels and cracks down on them). But at this point, remittance isn't what's worrying me, it's actually the lack of domestic investor confidence. The latter creates jobs at home and can help drive exports (wherein remittances gradually become less necessary). But there are still a lot of barriers and fears preventing locals from seriously investing. IMHO, the situation's pretty bad if political parties can orchestrate attacks against Bahria Town.

It's 2 months, used to be a month, IIRC. Also applies to two or more different stays cumulatively stretching more than 2 months. The fact that the "tax" is 25-50% of the phone's original price is besides the point.

They have no right. A pretty transparent example of the government's loyalties and blatant hypocrisy.
