Almost three decades ago, India faced a similar situation as Pakistan is today.
Indian crisis was quite serious (not sure more serious than Pakistan's, need experts to have a say on this).

India's reserves plummeted to as low as $1.1 billion (this is ridiculously low) and only enough money was left to import oil for 6 to 7 days. And then I think the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) decided or proposed that the Indian gold be put into foreign banks to get some exchange. Gold was then transported overnight to foreign banks and India got some breathing space. Then the Indians 'woke up' and started economic reforms and economic liberalisation took place and so on and so forth. Fast foward three decades, India is an economic giant. Today Indian foreign exchange reserves sit at around a whoping $400 billion approx. While Pakistan is standing where India was three decades ago at $9billion.

Few takeaways:

1. There's a lot we can learn from India as to how they not only got out of economic misery but reserved their fortunes in such a short period of time.

2. We need to re educate ourselves. And this re education, I'm afraid, nobody wants to do. The fact that there are entire threads on pdf in 2018, where we are telling Indians that look we are even because we can nuke you from our tactical nukes so better tell your Army Chief to shut up, shows that we are still not realizing that in 2018, a country's economy talks and decides its worth.

3. Twitter wars are useless and a means to get us carried away. It doesn't matter if the twitter handle fighting the war is Imran Khan's own our some one else's. It's justva twitter or at best diplomatic war which doesn't undo the fact that we are three decades behind the enemy.

4. The entire nation is chest thumping aftet IK lashed out at his Indian counterpart overtly. The other day we were all celrbrating beating Afghanistan in a cricket match. Why have we stooped this low?

5. IK seems to be our last chance as far as fixing economy is concerened. I think he's doing a fair job educating the nation that where it stands. Seriously, at this point in time, it doesnt befit us to pretend to be looking eye to eye to the Indians. We need to get out of this mentality of 'muh tor jawab den gay'. Jawab dena hai to economy de gi. Woh hum se hua nahi.

This nation has great pottential. I can't believe that today Bangladesh has an econonmy better than us. Bangladesh used to be our province! I hope that two decades down the line from today, we atleast stand where India is standing today. If Indians can do it, why can't we..

Its not only about reforms, its also about security situation where you have to send division of army to guard your best friend Chinese. Gangadeshis never faced such situation at least in mainland..

improve security image of Pakistan, when foreigners will believe they can move in and out Pakistan without any risk, investments will start pouring..

I know pdf is not the best place to discuss but still there are quite a lot of members who still have the ability to have civil discussions. And the best way to deal with ignorant arrogants and trolls is to give them the silent treatment. One doesn't need to 'prove' the point. State your opinion and move on.

We can put forth as many excuses as we want..doesn't change the situation at hand.

because we are an emotional nation rather than looking at facts.People think just because our army is good it will protect us from all sorts of threats not knowing that economy is the basic backbone of a country which primarily runs the army without money army is nothing

We are still living in the 90s where 'Pak Fauj' and 'Aitmi quwwat' is everything.

@Alpha BeeTee India in the 90s had an army of highly educated netas and economists who were given space to respond after the politicans almost broke the economy. Does your country have enough qualified people in the right position to respond?

Pakistan's problem has never been the lack of specialists.
It's always the poor management of these resources and mamoth curroption.
Skilled docs,engineers,economists..we have all. Indians have a misconception that we dont have specialists.

Its not as big as Imran Khan / PTI made it out to look like to win elections.

There's been no policy change from the new Government except a few symbolic gestures like auctioning of Prime Ministerial cars.

Like previous Governments Imran Khan / PTI is going to make further symbolic changes and keep asking the country to give them 100 days to improvise, then just 3 months, then 1 year, then 3 years, then 5 and then they'll finally ask for 10 years.

Within the next 5 years I am expecting Prime Minister's declared assets to at least triple from the current Rs 1.1 billion.

It is not as big?
$9billion in reserves and $95 billion debt.
Can there be a bigger crisis than this?!

Thought provoking post in OP.
Yes, that whole Twitter based chest thumping is embarrassing but still, on the whole, Pakistani media is far more open and less jingoistic than India's is.

As to comparing with India of 1991--not a fair comparison. A lot can be said about it but basically Pakistan's #1 problem has been, since 1947, a rivalry with a giant like India. It's an unwinnable war for Pakistan but now a stalemate looks more achievable--which is a victory of sort for Pakistan. Also, India, in 1947, was better placed to be a successful state and had more resources to secure itself from external threats. Pakistan wasn't and in fact Pakistan had to invest too much on it's defense at the expense of other development directions. And so, despite the 'Hindu Rate of Growth', India had, by 1991, made a solid manufacturing and educational foundation.

But Pakistan's wasn't and still isn't too bad. Pakistan has faced crises like current crisis before and I BELIEVE is going to come out fine. Keep peace on the borders. Keep terrorism on check. If so then we may see a repeat of the Ayub Khan's Golden Decade again.
