Is Pakistani Textile Industry taking India's place on a global level? - BBC URDU

Bangladesh is creating a very smart and strong example of industrialization for South Asia, taking on some of the characteristics of the East Asian model. Hopefully Pakistan will not be far behind.

Bangladesh is still far behind but has made great leaps. Would be interesting to see where it will end up 20 years from now.

The problem of Pakistan is people mindset, which is not of manufacturing things rather, trading, smuggling, we like to invest in land and construction, not in industry or manufacturing. Secondly, most of the Pakistanis want easy government jobs rather than competing with the outer world.

True.

Not true. Pakistan had an industrial revolution before revolutionary democrat Bhutto destroyed it with forced nationalization

Pakistan has no choice, they need innovation, new technologies, young minds, investment and quality to survive in the international textile arena.

Pakistan is the fifth largest cotton producer in the world. We have massive man power, one of the world's largest leather producer. Why cant Pakistan become world's largest textile exporter.

That was a different time mate, people are now fashioned to be lazy and prefer easy money over hard work.
No. We need to get rid of Bhuttoism and everything will return to normal as was in the 1960s

What's going to be more important for Pakistan is Brand Development.

Pakistan will earn A LOT more building its own brands then it will by being a supplier of raw materials or finished products for another brand.

To provide an example Nike alone generated almost 40% more revenue in 2018 than all of Pakistan's exports combined that year.

The secret isn't to just make more stuff it's to create and build your own Pakistani brands.

Let India, Bangladesh and Vietnam fight to be the worlds next sweatshop we should be focusing on becoming the worlds next South Korea just a much larger version of it.

My view is that this isn't too important right now and the money could be better spent.

Innovation and development of new technologies is very expensive there are so many things we can do right now that don't require any of that only copying and some transfer of tech agreements particularly in the development of housing (we know how to build roads and houses and apartment buildings) and other infrastructure along with investment into the agricultural sector as well as mining alongside some manufacturing of heavy equipment and center pivot irrigation systems.

There are a host of products we import in large enough quantities that we can also produce them locally on a competitive market of scale with some investments into our own existing industries. Producing those goods will also allow us to expand production for export all while helping us to reduce imports.

You can actually hear Indian's across the border screaming "Jeay Liberals, Jeay Bhutto, Jeay PPP... for destroying Pakistan's industry and sowing fear and confusion into the minds of its people".

Unfortunately, despite his words, Khan doesn't seem to be an industrialist either. He's way too focused on social welfare when he should simply focus on industry and enforcement of minimum wage laws that should raised slowly based on data.

As people earn they can pay for basic social services themselves and after the economy has grown and the tax situation has been corrected we can then focus on social welfare programs like public healthcare and universal education.

We literally need every penny redirected into our industries right now.

That's perfectly fine in fact we need A LOT more investment in infrastructure.

We could grow substantially well over 12% yoy just by investing in low/medium income housing and building dams for both electricity and water storage (we can only store about 10% of the total annual indus water flow).

We probably have the worst housing crisis in Asia just shy of Afghanistan:

That's also why we have one of the house loan facilities in the region:

If we go by the cost to build Egypt's new administrative Capital Phase 1 that would mean we'd need to spend just over $600 Billion USD to eliminate our housing shortage though we'd obviously not be building such lucrative housing for most people instead one earlier estimate I did was something like $300 Billion was required though in all honesty these buildings would be there for decades to come so we're likely to spend more so they look great for years to come.

There are reports out of Canada that show, in the short term alone, you generate about $1.43 of GDP per $1 spent on infrastructure:
https://mhca.mb.ca/wp-content/uploa..._Public_Infrastructure_Spending_in_Canada.pdf

That doesn't even begin to take in the account the need for additional water sanitation and hydro electric dams required to store water while producing electricity that will cost tens of billions.

We've missed out on A LOT of economic development.

Pakistan's primary focus should be on fixing its tax collection to reinvest in the nation.

This isn't the need of the hour and wastes time and money better spent elsewhere.

Yeah all good but one thing at a time. Pakistan is in perpetual debt trap because of no export growth. With no export growth and ever rising imports, Pakistan is doomed to go bankrupt again and again. So Pakistan must focus on increasing exports . What kind of exports doesn't matter as Bangladesh too only exports cheap clothing yet its total exports are more than double to that of Pakistan.
So just focus on exports, only allow essential imports and when Pakistan comes out of debt trap, then start working on other problems

all are self employed and trying to start businesses

the boom in pakistan is just getting started

I disagree gents. I think people just lack opportunity. Wherever there is an opportunity for jobs in the private sector there is no lack of applicants. In the past there has been a trend for lazy investment, but that can be understood. If you build a factory you need to bribe a politician, if you buy a plot you just need to bribe a patwari. A factory requires constant electricity, a villa can be sold with UPS built in. The environment has not encouraged manufacturing or innovation.

Both are important. You are 100% right the brands are what will really generate wealth, but the sweatshops will put food on plates right now. The working class won't be developing brands, they'll be sowing Nike footballs or the up and coming global Pakistani equivalent. The businessmen is the one that will benefit from the brand, but can start from the sweatshop or small manufacturing unit.

Social media is a bubble so it's easy to get a distorted view, but this is the impression I am getting. Pakistani's are being inspired to start businesses of their own. It's very exciting.
