Everywhere you look on the internet we have Indians who say India is rich, India is awesome, India is great.

So is India truly rich where there is no crime against women and kids and is India truly a rich country when it comes to material wealth?

I want to know how and when this happened? According to posters on this forum, Australia is a poor country when compared to India.

So going by this forum India is powerful and the most wealthy country in the world, that is amazing in anyone's book.

Rich and poor is subjective to conditions. An investment banker making $1M a year is poor compared to Bill Gates.

When it comes to India, there is a large section of the population that lives the same life as first world populations and there is a section which is dirt poor.

Here's a fun fact:
Only 5% of India's population is now below the extreme poverty line.

India is a poor country with a rich government. I think it's opposite in Pakistan with people being rich and government being poor.

That is still 75 million people.

It used to be 85% of the population during independence.

In terms of volume, then yes, India is much richer than Australia. Which means India has greater buying power. But poorer than US, China, Japan, UK, France and Germany.

You can deride if it makes you happy, it will not change the facts on ground. We are still poor by any standards you measure. Australian entire population will be equivalent to big cities in India like Mumbai and Calcutta. And your country is more like a continent. So, comparisons are meaningless

Rich is a relative term. India's fundamental problem is inequal income distribution and improper and socialist government planning for over 70 years.

Australia on a per capita basis is far richer than us and that is something we accept. In fact, Australia is one of the infrastructure benchmarks for India to look up to and measure as a goal. You have planned cities, well-laid-out roads, excellent law and order, rational labour laws and strict enforcement, sincere politicians and on top of that, very, very less population compared to your landmass and resources.

It will take us time to get there but we will.

I don't think crime has anything to do with rich or poor considering the crime rate in US and Europe which have one third and a fraction of our population. It has mainly to do with lax law and order and we are working on it.

In the meanwhile, there is no harm in learning good points from all countries including China and Australia. :)

I as an Indian and a resident here for over 36 years can tell you that India is indeed an awesome place to live. We have everything here; rich, poor, clean, dirty, rude, polite, spicy, bland etc. You name it. As much as some motormouth media in our country with biased agenda have a habit of making us look like Somalia or Congo, nothing is further from the truth than that. :)

You are shown this most of the time:

But not this:

Both are in India itself.

If we have a high-crime state such as Bihar, we also have a nearly zero crime state such as mine, Sikkim.
If we have an aggressive big city such as Delhi, there are also decent and safe big cities such as Mumbai, Hyderabad or Bengaluru.

People differ and so does their attitude. We got to choose what is best and evolve.

Good answer.

Good answer.

Thanks.

I believe most Indians here would want to actually tell you this very fact, but some due to lack of being able to express properly, would have conveyed that we are a land of milk and honey.

Our pride stems from the fact that we are a civilizational country with a powerful history. Indian nationalism has nothing to do with belittling others, as nationalism is viewed in the Western societies.

Hope that clears the air.

Actually India is way way way richer than Australia. How?

India added 27 USD billionaire in just 2016. Thats almost as many billionaires as Australia had in 2016.

That said, India also has way too many people. Meaning, manual work done by an Indian fetches too less of money, making a vast majority of Indians poor. A waitress in India can hope to earn less than 100 INR a day and India has no tipping culture as well. Compare this to an average salary of 3000 AUD per month of a waitress in Australia.

Thats what India is. An extremely rich country having extremely large number of people. So the most of the people are poor but some people who do exceptional things (legal or illegal) are extremely rich. A senior software developer can hope to earn 100 times salary of a small time waitress in India -- senior developers in FAANG companies in India can make north of 3.6 million INR while a small time waiter or waitress will make 36-40 thousand INR in an year. Simple reason, there are too many of Indians. I doubt a waiter or waitress in Sydney is doing any thing special which someone in B'lore is not doing. Its a simple question of demand and supply. If India decides to kill --God forbid-- 90% of its population, suddenly out of blue, it will become extremely rich country per capita. Most of Indians are under-employed or under-productive because the market does not have that much need for their labour.

As far as social issues go, those are correlated to population as well. When you have too many people, it is hard to police them.
