No country would recognize them merely through a referendum. Catalans did a referendum that passed with splendid colors and in the end no one recognized Catalan statehood.

Turkey will rip the Kurds apart.

Assad will probably reach a deal with them for autonomy.

Iran will comply with Assad if the Kurds dont demand Iranian territory.

Having a Kurdish state within the Turkish sphere of influence is a lot better than dealing with those ungrateful mullah dogs of Iraq. KRG and Barzani have been resourceful for Turkey both politically and economically, so who gives a damn about Iraq's unity. Their army have proven to be incapable of preserving it, even against few hundred terrorists with pickup trucks.
