While Su-24 is an all weather attack aircraft, Su-25 is a dedicated ground attack and close air support fighter jet, much like the American A-10.

That aircraft is a flying tank, can take a lot of punishment and still complete its mission and bring the pilot safely back.
Check this video.. The effects are eyesore, but the footages are real.At one point you will see one jet with almost half the engine blown of and still came back safely.

The best Iraqi pilots were assigned to the SU-25, supposedly during the Iran Iraq war only one SU-25 was downed. It's been decades since Iraq has operated SU-25's, i would imagine that many of those pilots are either retired, dead or really old.

it's a more practical approach than f-16 , they are delivered faster , Iraq personnel are familiar with them and so there is no need for expensive and lengthy training program to operate them when the country is in such immediate need of them , and honestly maintaining them is a lot cheaper.
