TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri underlined the need for boosting the country’s deterrent power by setting up overseas naval bases, saying Iran might need naval bases in Syria and Yemen in future.
In an address to a gathering of senior Navy commanders in Tehran on Saturday, Major General Baqeri said one of the country’s main military strategies, which needs to be developed, is blocking the enemy’s access to the Iranian territories and forcing their vessels to stay away from the country’s coasts.

Iran’s Navy should have a fleet in the Indian Ocean, similar to the one stationed in the Sea of Oman, he underlined.

“One day, we may need (naval) bases on the coasts of Yemen and Syria, and we need the necessary infrastructures for it under the international maritime law,” the senior commander explained.

Highlighting the great deterrent effect of overseas naval bases, which could be ten times more efficient than nuclear power, Major General Baqeri added, “We can set up fixed platforms in the Persian Gulf, and have floating platforms elsewhere.”

He further emphasized the need for broader intelligence activities by the Navy, urging hard work on satellite technology, cyber-space and naval drones for voyages, as the Iranian Navy has embarked on naval missions in the Atlantic Ocean.

A new warship, dubbed Shiraz, which is now under construction, will greatly help the naval forces in their intelligence operations, he said.

Iran’s coasts have the potential for several new ports, the top general added, saying Iran can change the geopolitical equations in the region by breaking Russia’s monopoly on Central Asia’s connection with the world.

The Central Asian countries demand to have access to international waters through Iran, he went on to say

Perhaps Pakistan should learn from China and build artificial islands in the Arabian Sea and then build naval bases upon them.
The Iranian General is right.

Yeah you right.

According to generals Bagheri statements,I think Iran is heading towards artificial islands strategy which is a very effective strategy!

Aircraft carriers would be part of Irans new naval strategy!

The only obstacle would be MONEY!

We have a threat of American Nukes from Diego Garcia Islands ... and in a situation of War we need BabAl Mandab strait to restrict US navy

I don't see any value for pakistan to do that unless it builds islands deep into the Arabian sea. Also pakistan will face sanctions from it as well. I don't think its worth it. Pakistan has more than enough deterrence.

Small aircraft carriers ... ;)

About 6 aircrafts and 5 helicopters ! :)

So when the US threatened to bomb Pakistan back to the "Stone Age", Pakistan had enough deterence?

If anything Iran should learn from China is that a solid economy (not reliant on oil exports) makes all those dreams and projects possible and affordable in first place. Look how China came latest to the island building race U.S. aligned nations started. Yet with our economic and logistical assets in place Chinese islands make the others projects look almost unmentionworthy insignificant and like childs play of nations overstepping their capabilities for a brief moment of showing defiance.

At this moment odds are more likely some of those other islands will backfire and serve instead as future Chinese outposts, because the nation who built them had no means to man, equip and defend them.
