Iranian Naval engines

The next generation of Iranian submarine, called "Besat" will use Brushless DC motors (BLDC). The technology has been successfully developed in Iran.

Most probably very first implementation of bldc electric Propulsion, correct me if im wrong.

it is a torpedo aft, not a sub. how many times did you see a double propeller on a sub?

Do not focus too much on that photo. That just came with the article and news regarding the development of the BLDC engines for submarines.

.
Good question, I am not aware of a military submarine using this type of propulsion. Iran may be the first nation that will use that in its submarines. @skyshadow any more information?

no but we will see it in Besaat sub first.

Given that we know Besat submarine will be even larger than 3000 tons (perhaps 5000/6000 tons), it will be interesting to know if they still go with the AIP propulsion system or go for a nuclear system. We know they are working on nuclear reactor for submarines and ships. I personally feel they will stick to the AIP as from my understand it is less noisy than nuclear based systems. Having said that, I will not be surprised if they develop a few Besats with nuclear based propulsion too. But I would say the bulk of the future Besat submarines will utilise AIP.

after ww2 usa had a USS Albacore (AGSH-569) that used contra-rotating propellers . also that design is not unknown in building boats .the design is not that common because of complexity and cost and the fact that shape of a submarine (sail and control planes can cancel the toque effect) , but provide advantages such as higer thrust, higher efficiency

wonder if iran planing to design a sub without control surfaces ? Sweden tried to do that in 60s but delays in designing the tehnologies needed prevented them and later they moved to other designs.

agreed but what is clear is that Iran will use nuclear reactor for submarine its matter of when not if.

During the recent nuclear day which was cancelled due to Covid, there was talk of Iranian nuclear reactor for ships and submarines being revealed, I assume this was just the beginning of the projects and not a finalised product design. What was said in the Farsi sources about this? Here is the English source:

“The new achievements include a series of products with medical, industrial and energy application, including a number of radiopharmaceuticals for curing cancer, nuclear propulsion systems for ships and submarines, as well as high and medium-power lasers with industrial use," Behrouz Kamalvandi, Spokesperson for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), told the Iranian state news channel IRINN on Wednesday.

Given that we have already made the water jet engine, I hope to see the use of Pump/water-jets in our submarines:

When one looks at the military sector, an important and key difficulty can be witnessed in various areas, ranging from fighter jets to tanks and naval ships. This difficulty lies in the area of engine development. The design and manufacture of engines is arguably one of , if not the most difficult aspect of any military project. Many nations (including highly advanced) that boast of fielding hardware, rely upon importing of this crucial technology. Iranian military development is growing at a rapid rate and one area which Iran can boast in is indeed this engine sector. Iran has achieved a respectable level in the engine technology in general, however, in this thread I will focus on marine engines.

The engines you see below were designed and manufactured by various bodies, either alone or jointly. They are:

1- Iran Defence Industry Organization (DI0)
2- IRGC
3- Iranian Navy
4- various private owned companies or so called "Knowledge based companies"
5- Other companies include Iran Heavy Diesel Manufacturing Company (DESA), MAPNA groups and others.

Water jet engine
"Toos Darya" is the first Iranian water jet engine. This version has 1200 horsepower, however, the next generation will have 3500 horsepower:

For those of interested in learning more about water jet engines in general, watch this:

Tous:

Revealed in 2017, this 200 horsepower engine is used to power various Iranian small boats to the speed of 41 knots.

This is a system developed to be used in Iranian military speed boats. Compared to earlier versions in Iranian use, this increases the speed of the boats by 30%, whilst reducing their fuel consumption by 25%. The system also leads to much better maneuverability of the boats.

Bonyan-1

Revealed back in 2011, not much is known about this engine except that is was designed to have 850 horspower:

Bonyan-4:

The is a 5000 horsepower engine. These are regarded to be powering Iranian frigates in the Mowj family.

This one is not specifically used in the navy, but can be used in that sector:

Future projects:

There are various future projects Iran is developing. The most important of which are:

1) The development of a 25MW gas turbine engine. Iranian MAPNA is one of the leading gas turbine producers, they are working with the defence sector to develop this. They have developed many different types of gas turbines till date. For example, here is the MAPNA MGT-30 gas turbine with 25MW:

2) Development of Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) for Iranian submarines.

3) Nuclear reactor engine. The development of these engines is on Iran's agenda.

Unfortunately the informations available were scattered and not abundant to make this thread (took me a while!). Nevertheless, I hope you find this thread informative and helpful. To my Iranian friends, lets try and keep this thread updated!
Bonyan 4 looks suspiciously similar to a MAN genset diesel. A repurposed unit?
