While watching video clips of Iranian missile tests, this surface to air missile seems to lose direction and goes up in circle waywardly few seconds after being launched...Not sure if the missile failed?

Did the missile at 0:55 fail?

No, it didn't fail, missiles change course to their target trajectry after gaining a minimum level of altitude, so there was no "mis-directional" issue involved in it.

What abbasniazi said, but in case of two-stage missiles, what you could see shooting upwards is 1st stage engine, which after launch is dropped by the missile, and because of losing "the brains", 1st engine randomly flies till completely burns.

Here is how it looks in Apollo (same principle for space rockets and multiple-stage missiles)

The missile as described by OP is surface to air,
so it's primary role is Air defense.

Why it is shown hitting a naval ship then ? .. which looks like a super sonic warhead hitting the ship anyway.

Harry,
from the sight of the missile it does not look like a two stage missile, and neither does it need to be two stage.

Yes! sometimes the tests fails too but it doesn't matter..pplz learn from their mistakes to achieve something great.....:smokin:

that isnt a surface to air missile.this is QADER anti ship missile

It is a Ghader Anti ship cruise missile and the thing that got detached was actually the booster. The missile uses a turbojet engine which doesn't generate much smoke and the smoke you see is that of solid fuel booster.
