Iran will produce nuclear weapons if attacked: Russia

Russia warned Tuesday that Iran would have no option but to develop nuclear weapons if it came under attack from either the United States or Israel over its contested atomic programme.

"The CIA and other US officials admit they now have no information about the Iranian leadership taking the political decision to produce nuclear weapons," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Moscow's Kommersant FM radio.

"But I am almost certain that such a decision will surely be taken after (any) strikes on Iran," Lavrov said.

The pre-recorded interview was aired shortly after Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned that his country was ready to strike back against either the United States or Israel "at the same level as they attack us".

Moscow has close military and commercial ties with Tehran and has only grudgingly backed four rounds of UN Security Council sanctions over Iran's suspected nuclear weapons development drive.

But Lavrov argued that Russia was not defending an ally but trying to avert a broader conflict or possible nuclear arms race from breaking out in the region.

He added that Israel's threats against Iran were only pushing other nations on poor terms with the West to consider pursuing their own nuclear weapon drives.

"This happening... around Iran are forcing a lot of Third World countries to pause and realise that if you have a nuclear bomb, no one will really bother you.

"You might get some light sanctions, but people will always coddle you, they will court you and try to convince you of things," Lavrov said.

He particularly raised the case of North Korea and its decision to both develop and test nuclear weapons -- a move that was never followed by a threat of an attack from the United States.

"But we are all behaving responsibly" toward North Korea, said Lavrov.

"We are not proposing to bomb North Korea. We are all insisting on the immediate resumption of negotiations and looking for ways to make these negotiations productive."

He also repeated arguments from some Western military analysts saying that strikes could only set back but not permanently destroy any weapons programme Iran might have today.

"Scientists of almost all nations... agree that strikes against Iran can slow its nuclear programme. But do away with it, close it, eliminate it -- never."

Lavrov's comments represented one of Russia's most impassioned arguments to date against the start of another war on its southern periphery.

Russia had previously cautioned that such a campaign could lead to a mass flood of refugees to neighbouring countries like Azerbaijan. It has also warned of the dangers of possible reprisal attack from Iran.

But Lavrov appeared ready to drop that argument on Tuesday by noting that an attack against Israel could also endanger the lives of Palestinians.

"I am absolutely convinced that Iran will never decide to do this, if only because... a threat to destroy Israel will also destroy Palestine," he said.

He also went out of his way to strongly criticise Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for repeatedly threatening to destroy the Jewish state.

"This is completely unacceptable... and we categorically condemn it," Lavrov said. "It is simply uncivilised and unworthy of a country as ancient as Iran."

"Iran will produce nuclear weapons if attacked" I DONOT AGREE iran will not be in a condition to make nukes after getting attacked .Right time is now if iran can do it , do it now.

The sanctions will only bite harder the longer they carry on; an attack might not be needed at all.

i don't know whether iran is working on nuclear weapons but pressure by western world may push iran to do so.

USA shouldn't underestimate Iran; attack on Iran may provoke a power to retaliate worse than US fighting in Afghanistan. Best way is to find peaceful solution.

I think sanctions are not going to work here any more, this will only effect the civil people which USA is always willing to hit hard..

Iran should have Nukes as they need safety from israel and USA ... :flame:

What is the point of making nukes? If we do so,we will be under much harder pressure and sanctions.North Korea has nukes. What else does it have?Just not being attacked?does that really worth all the misery?
Iran will never make a nuclear weapon.Haters gonna hate, but that's it and that's the truth.Even CIA and Mosad have admitted that.
Us knows If Israel attacks Iran,it is Israel that will suffer the most, not Iran. There isn't a war coming. They just threaten so maybe Iran backs of from its rights.

economic sanctions have rarely worked. Iran will and has found countries willing to trade. Back to topic under the current circumstances who would blame Iranians for producing Nukes.
entire united nations and iran knows it look

‘Iran not to pull out of NPT, not to halt nuclear energy program'
Iran rules out pulling out of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) but insists it will not abandon the right to peaceful nuclear technology.

In an interview with France 24 TV news channel, Iranian Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Ali Asghar Soltanieh said the country is determined to continue its nuclear energy program under the UN agency’s control.

Asked about the possibility of Iran's withdrawal from the NPT, Soltanieh recalled how the Islamic Republic has remained committed to its international obligations despite sanctions, war threats and even the assassination of its nuclear scientists.

He vowed Iran will not abandon its “inalienable” right to nuclear technology while it will continue to cooperate with the IAEA and not pull out of the NPT.

The Iranian official rejected remarks indicating that US-led Western pressure on the country to halt its nuclear activities has yielded fruit, saying the claim is "a serious mistake and a serious miscalculation.”

He noted that the involvement of the UN Security Council and its US-engineered sanctions have just prompted Iranians to more seriously pursue their nuclear energy program and speed up their efforts.

Soltanieh condemned Israeli war threats against Iran as a violation of international laws, particularly the resolution 533 of 1990 in the general conference of the IAEA, which prohibits “all armed attacks against nuclear installations devoted to peaceful purposes whether under construction or in operation.”

He called on the world to condemn Israel’s war rhetoric as an infringement of international law jeopardizing the peaceful use of nuclear energy, reminding that any strike against nuclear installations could lead to a radiation disaster beyond borders.

The ambassador reiterated Tehran’s stance on negotiations as the right solution to the West’s nuclear standoff with Iran, adding that Tehran has always called on other parties to join negotiations, rather than take the path of confrontation.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always called for negotiations without any conditions, and equal footing based on mutual respect,” he said.

Soltanieh said “the attitude and conduct of the Western countries and their miscalculations have created a complicated situation,” and called for an end to the West’s “carrot and stick” policy toward the Islamic Republic.

“This is a time to change their attitude and conduct…they have been using the language and the policy of carrot and stick, or sanctions and negotiations -- these are a sort of neo-colonialist mentality,” he urged.

“They have to talk and have a different approach: let’s negotiate and talk in a civilized manner and a respectful manner. That is the only way for a solution to the nuclear issue.”

Then why is the Irani Rial losing value rapidly after this round of sanctions?
