Senior energy officials in Iran pledged to triple the countrys supply to Pakistan to help meet its energy needs in the coming winter season, Iranian media reported on Sunday.
Iranian Deputy Energy Minister Mohammad Behzad said, electricity exports to Pakistan will increase step by step. He said this while highlighting the recent proposal sent by Pakistans government to increase power import from Iran.
Irans Energy Minister Majid Namjou said that by the next three years, the country will increase the electricity exports to Pakistan by 1,000 megawatts and that Iran was working on a new power grid in order to deliver electricity to Pakistan.
Amid Pakistans crippling energy crisis, the Pakistani government has announced curtailment of gas to industries for two months in the winter in order to keep homes heated.
Iran currently exports about 100 megawatts of electricity to Pakistan, an official said.
Iran also showed interest to export surplus electricity to all neighbouring countries including Pakistan.
Behzad announced that Irans power grid will soon be connected to those of Southern Persian Gulf littoral states.
The Iranian deputy energy minister also said that Irans power exports are expected to reach a mark of $1billion in the current Iranian year which started on March 21.
Irans electricity network is connected into the power grids of seven neighboring countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.
