“United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt face challenges from Iran, Israel and Turkey,” said Abdallah Ben Zayed Al-Nahian, the Foreign Minister of UAE in Cairo on Sunday.
He added that Egypt and Saudi Arabia have a historic responsibility facing these challenges and that the UAE is supporting both countries' efforts.
Ben Zayed met in Cairo his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry and the two held a joint press conference, particularly focusing on the problems with Qatar.
The relations between Turkey and the UAE have strained since mid-2017 as a result of the Qatar crisis. The UAE is particularly uncomfortable with Turkey’s support to Qatar and groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood.
In late 2017, Anwar Gargash who has cabinet portfolios of minister of state for federal national council affairs and minister of state for foreign affairs, called for a “strengthened Arab union” to prevent the Arab world from being dominated by Iran and Turkey.
In another row, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reactedangrily to a retweet from the United Arab Emirates’ foreign minister that accused Ottoman Turkey and the head of state’s ancestors of stealing relics from the holy city of Medina in present-day Saudi Arabia.
