Siemens Quits Iran Southern Gas Field
Iran is commissioning domestic manufacturers to make turbocompressors for South Pars gas field, after the German energy firm Siemens announced it was withdrawing its services following international sanctions on Iran, Mehr News Agency reported on April 17.
Siemens had provided all of the turbocompressors in phases one to 10 of the South Pars gas field, southern Iran, in the past two decades, but had recently delayed in delivering its orders as international sanctions grew against Iran, causing dissatisfaction among the managers of the National Iranian Oil Company, Mehr reported.
According to Mehr, the German firm recently wrote to the directors of the new phases of South Pars, saying it "could not provide services and maintain guarantees of turbocompressors in South Pars."
Mehr said that new contracts for turbocompressors and their spare parts would be granted to domestic producers, as Iran is now capable of producing the technology domestically.
Abbas Aliabadi, the head of Iran Power Plant Projects Management Company (MAPNA), has said "MAPNA is currently designing, manufacturing and installing turbocompressors in phases 13, 14 and 19 of South Pars."
Aliabadi has said that his company was prepared to undertake the manufacture of turbocompressors for more phases of South Pars, adding that sanctions were therefore "not a cause for concern".
