Pompeo says Iran ‘desperately’ keen to return to talks for sanctions relief

Fri, 2020-12-04 19:18
WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday said Iran was 'desperately' signaling its willingness to return to the negotiating table to get sanctions relief, although he did not elaborate how Washington would respond.
Speaking at the IISS Manama Dialogue, Pompeo did not provide proof as to how Tehran was more keen for talks.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have risen since 2018, when Trump abandoned Obama's 2015 nuclear deal, and restored economic sanctions to pressure Tehran to negotiate stricter curbs on its nuclear program, ballistic missile development and support for regional proxy forces.

Iran plans to install more advanced atomic centrifuges underground: IAEA

Fri, 2020-12-04 16:52
VIENNA: Iran has told the UN nuclear watchdog it plans to install three more cascades, or clusters, of advanced IR-2m centrifuges at its underground uranium enrichment plant at Natanz, the agency told member states on Friday in a report obtained by Reuters.
“Iran informed the Agency that the operator of the Fuel Enrichment Plant (FEP) at Natanz ‘intends to start installation of three cascades of IR-2m centrifuge machines’ at FEP,” the agency wrote, adding that the three cascades were in addition to one of IR-2m machines already used for enrichment there.
Iran’s nuclear deal with major powers says Tehran can only use first-generation IR-1 centrifuges, which are less efficient, at the underground plant and that those are the only machines Iran can accumulate enriched uranium with.

On one hand, Iran wants sanctions relief. But on the other hand, they want to grow their nuclear weapons program and ballistic missiles program.

I believe the world should offer Iran no sanctions relief of any kind until they let go of their weapons programs. That includes nuclear, ballistic, and conventional weaponry.
I believe this because Iran has proven itself a sponsor of terror groups. And even if you'd factor in a Shia resistance against Sunni "oppression" or "intimidation", i believe it's about time that the Shia factions acknowledge that they're severely in the minority.

.

Shia and Sunni Islam are the two major denominations of Islam. They chose sides following the death of the Islamic prophet Muhammad in AD 632. A dispute over succession to Islamic prophet Muhammad as a caliph of the Islamic community spread across various parts of the world, which led to the Battle of Jamal and Battle of Siffin. After the death of Prophet Muhammed, Muslims had a disagreement. Sunnis believed that Muhammed's successor should be Abu Bakr and Omar, and the Shias believed that his successor should be Ali. The dispute intensified greatly after the Battle of Karbala, in which Hussein ibn Ali and his household were killed by the ruling Umayyad Caliph Yazid I, and the outcry for revenge divided the early Islamic community, which is known today as Islamic schism to differ from Christian schism that happened later.[1]

The present demographic breakdown between the two denominations is difficult to assess and varies by source, but a good approximation is that 85% of the world's Muslims are Sunni and 15% are Shia Muslims, with most Shias belonging to the Twelver tradition and the rest divided between many other groups.[2] Sunnis are a majority in most Muslim communities: in Southeast Asia, China, South Asia, Africa, and a part of the Arab world. Shia make up the majority of the citizen population in Iraq, Bahrain, Iran, and Azerbaijan, as well as being a politically significant minority in Pakistan, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Kuwait.[13]

let me be clear : i do not support a full unconditional surrender by Shias towards Sunnis.
but at the same time, trying to outgun the Sunnis does not seem a realistic option for the Shias.
They'll simply not allow you to grow a nuclear attack force. They'd get the West to wage full scale war on Iran to prevent that.

And in order to prevent much economic and real world suffering in Iran, i hereby beg the Iranians to play the underdog in a stylish way. To let go of their weapon ambitions. To settle their differences with Sunnis through economic and diplomatic and tourism means. IT CAN BE DONE, dear Iranians.

and such will also be my advice to my mailinglist. i'll include a copy of the email forward of this post soon.

Iran’s Rouhani rejects bill designed to violate UN enrichment caps

Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani on Wednesday rejected a bill approved by parliament that would have suspended UN inspections and boosted uranium enrichment, saying it would harm diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring its 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and easing US sanctions.
Iran signed the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, with the United States, Germany, France, Britain, China and Russia. The deal allows Iran only to keep a stockpile of 202.8 kilograms of low-enriched uranium. Citing the US withdrawal from the deal, Iran has breached many of JCPOA’s restrictions, including on the purity to which it enriches uranium and its stock of enriched uranium.
The bill would have required the government to resume enriching uranium to 20% if European nations failed to provide relief from US sanctions on the country’s oil and banking sectors. Rouhani on Wednesday said his administration “does not agree with that and considers it harmful for the trend of diplomatic activities”.
The disagreements over the bill reflects the rivalry between Rouhani, a relative moderate, and the hard-line lawmakers who dominate parliament. However, whether approved or rejected, the bill was expected to have little impact, as Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has the final say on all major policies.
The United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency last month found that, as of November 2, Iran had a stockpile of 2,442.9kg, up from 2,105.4kg reported on August 25. It added that Iran has been continuing to enrich uranium to a purity of up to 4.5%, higher than the 3.67% allowed under the deal.

i'd like to thank mr Rouhani for his wisdom in this matter, and i hope Khamenei follows his example, for the good of all Iranians.

Iran probably needed nuclear weapons 30 years ago. With the intense pressure and escalating attacks, I don't think it would be possible for Iran to develop nuclear weapons in the future.

see, it's the very fact that you openly say such things, that we can't allow you to have any WMDs at all.
and make no mistake about it, we'll sanction you or go to war with you even, to ensure that you don't get WMDs. as we've stated over and over and over again, we consider you too much of a threat to the nations near to you.

also, it was Saddam's own decision, and your own government's, to go to war with each other.
don't blame us for it.
yes, the rest of the world gave logistical support for this war between Iraq and Iran (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_aid_to_combatants_in_the_Iran–Iraq_War), but it was Saddam himself who decided to make war on Iran https://www.history.com/topics/middle-east/iran-iraq-war#:~:text=Started by Iraq dictator Saddam, tankers in the Persian Gulf.. You're going to have to provide real evidence that we pushed / enticed Saddam to go to war against you.

Tensions between Iraq and Iran were fuelled by Iran's Islamic revolution and its appearance of being a Pan-Islamic force, in contrast to Iraq's Arab nationalism.
Iran–Iraq War - Wikipedia
en.wikipedia.org › wiki › Iran–Iraq_War

perhaps contrary to your beliefs about us, the West as a whole would have been fine with a peaceful Pan-Islamic Iran.
so long as you would have sold us your oil at a fair price and refrained from things like sponsoring terror groups.

Iraq's rationale for the invasion was primarily to cripple Iran and prevent Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini from exporting the 1979 Iranian Revolution movement to Shia-majority Iraq and threaten the Sunni-dominated Ba'athist leadership.

So while you could say that the west and the international community provided all the weaponry which enabled Saddam to make war on Iran, it was Saddam himself who felt cornered by your revolution. And while it can be argued that the West and international partners/adversaries provided Saddam with the motivation and fear as well as the weapons to start a war against Iran, you should also know that the average politician and citizen here in the west would have been totally fine with a peaceful Islamic-ruled Iran. This is evidenced by for instance the reluctance of the current US administration to bomb your nuclear facilities which you have deep inside your country, and the resulting political retreat of President Trump from such plans! And we prove our kind nature in other ways too.

Now, Iran defended itself with honor and dignity and success during the Iraq-Iran war, but perhaps you could have, in the initial phases of your revolution coming to fruition, alleviated fears in your region about such political-exports to nearby countries!

All in all, it was very unfortunate that this war happened in the first place.

But i assure you, the west is no threat to you unless you make us one.

And this talk that you do here, about "WMDs are needed to return the genocidal Europeans' favor", is (A) very paranoid, and (B) complete bullshit.

WE have the weapons-tech advantage, and WE'RE NOT SO STUPID AS TO GET STUCK IN PERPETUAL FEARS AGAIN (like which happened with the communists already) ABOUT HOW WMDs COULD BE USED IN REAL LIFE TO SOLVE STUPID POLITICAL, DIPLOMATIC AND ECONOMIC DISPUTES!

oh, that's why your people sold Saddam AND the Iranians weapons in the days leading up to the Iraq-Iran war, now is it? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_aid_to_combatants_in_the_Iran–Iraq_War)

because the muslims need more weapons in their ongoing Sunni-Shia conflicts?

i think spending on weaponry in the first place is a big mistake, especially when tensions are expected to run high.
that is no different from today!

The evil genocidal west supplied WMDs to saddam hussein to exterminate the Iranian race:

In the early 1980s, five German firms supplied equipment to manufacture botulin toxin and mycotoxin to Iraq. Iraq's State Establishment for Pesticide Production (SEPP) also ordered culture media and incubators from Germany's Water Engineering Trading.[3] Strains of dual-use biological material from France also helped advance Iraq's biological warfare program. From the United States, the non-profit American Type Culture Collection and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control sold or sent biological samples to Iraq up until 1989, which Iraq claimed to need for medical research. These materials included anthrax, West Nile virus and botulism, as well as Brucella melitensis, and Clostridium perfringens. Some of these materials were used for Iraq's biological weapons research program, while others were used for vaccine development.[4] In delivering these materials "The CDC was abiding by World Health Organization guidelines that encouraged the free exchange of biological samples among medical researchers..." according to Thomas Monath, CDC lab director. It was a request "which we were obligated to fulfill," as described in WHO and UN treaties.[5]

We are completely aware of white men's vile genocidal nature:

Now the evil genocidal west is a good boy because now Iran is armed to the teeth with biological weapons, Now if the genocidal white men want to pull this crap once more every single one of their population centers are going to be targeted with nasty, nasty biological agents and there's nothing they can do about it so now the evil genocidals are behaving themselves.

i honestly didn't know any of this until you informed me about it.

i'm going to have to review my viewpoints.

maybe, maybe, a nuclear armed Iran is acceptable to me after all.

UPDATE : well, i've thought about the whole matter, and here's my current conclusions :

(1) there's enough weapons in the world already, no country needs any more. the balance of power is stable at the moment.

(2) i don't trust Iran not to pass a suitcase nuclear bomb to be used against Israel or another nation, if tensions escalate somehow, possibly by other countries' rogue and/or secret forces.
apparently, there really are forces in the world who think it's best to see their enemies fight eachother, even over centuries old disputes.. i thoroughly disagree with this line of thinking.

(3) if Iran refrains from a weapons build up, they deprive the west and Israel of all reason, motivation, necessity and permission to project forces against Iran.

(4) the moderates in Iran, as well as most citizens of Iran, i suspect, do not want to pursue a nuclear weapons development program;
September 24, 2013 - During a speech at the UN General Assembly, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani says "Nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction have no place in Iran's security and defense doctrine, and contradict our fundamental religious and ethical convictions."

i am asking mr Rouhani publicly here and now to also stop futile purchases of conventional weaponry which are then likely to be handed over (on the cheap, or even for free) to terror groups, by the hardliners in Iran, but ONLY if he's able to do so AND remain in power at the same time.
it's best to see a moderate at the helm of Iranian politics, even if it does prove to be not entirely effective from the viewpoint of KSA, Israel and the West.

Iranian official denies rumors of decline in supreme leader’s health

DUBAI: An official close to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denied rumors on social media on Monday that the 81-year-old’s health was deteriorating.
“By the grace of God and with the good prayers of devotees, the gentleman (Ayatollah Khamenei) is in good health and is busy vigorously carrying out his plans according to his routine,” the official, Mehdi Fazaeli, said on Twitter.
Fazaeli has worked in an office publishing Khamenei’s work. His tweet was also reported by Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency.
The statement about Khamenei’s health appeared to be a response to reports by several news organizations, which referred to a tweet by a journalist in Arabic who said Khamenei had transferred duties to his son because of his health.
Khamenei has served as supreme leader since 1989, with the final say on all state matters. His health has been the subject of speculation for years.
A security official in Israel, which closely follows events in its enemy Iran, told Reuters: “We are aware of these rumors, and regard them as rumors only.”
The Tehran bourse’s index fell 10,000 points, or about 0.7% on Monday.
The state news agency IRNA blamed the decline on a “rumor widely exchanged on social media,” without giving details. But news websites, including bultannews.com, said the market was reacting to the rumors about Khamenei’s health.

Iran Supreme Leader Khamenei hands power to son due to health – report
If true, it is unclear if the role is permanent, as it goes against the Iranian constitution's laws regarding succession.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei may have transferred power to his son amid concerns over his declining health, Iranian journalist Momahad Ahwaze reported Saturday.

Taking to Twitter, Ahwaze wrote in Arabic that sources in Iran were concerned regarding the 81-year-old leader's health, and those close to him are reportedly "very concerned" over his deteriorating condition.

As such, his powers have reportedly been transferred to his 51-year-old son, Sayyid Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, who currently oversees several important security and intelligence departments in the country. European sources have pegged Mojtaba as a potential successor to the supreme leader's position for over 10 years, and British news outlet The Guardian even dubbed him "the gatekeeper to Iran's supreme leader" in a 2009 article.

Ahwaze noted that it is unclear what has caused such deterioration in the supreme leader's condition overnight, though he did suspect it could be prostate cancer.

Khamenei's deteriorating health has also reportedly seen the supreme leader cancel some important meetings, such as a recently scheduled meeting with President Hassan Rouhani, according to Ahwaze.

Khamenei has been in power since 1989, having taken over following the death of the Islamic Republic's founder, Ruollah Khomenei. However, he has had health issues in the past, and in 2014 had surgery on his prostate. According to French news outlet Le Figaro in 2015, Western sources believed the supreme leader had suffered from prostate cancer.

No official confirmation has been made regarding any potential transfer of power, and media outlets have been unable to confirm it.

The Iranian journalist gained notoriety due to his coverage of the Islamic Republic's COVID-19 outbreak, despite Tehran's attempts at downplaying its severity, Newsweek reported.

If his reports are true, it would mean that Khamenei is stepping down following increased tensions with the US and Israel, as Tehran blames the Jewish state for the assassination of its chief nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, on November 27.

In addition, it is unclear if the succession will be permanent, as it goes against the constitution's rules regarding appointing a new supreme leader.

According to Article 111 of Iran's constitution, the supreme leader's successor is to be chosen by the Assembly of Experts, which currently consists of 88 ayatollahs. In the interim, the country would be administered by a provisional leadership council, which would consist of Iran's president, chief justice and a member of the guardian council.

However, according to articles from the prestigious Washington Institute for Near East Policy think tank, it may not be as simple as that, with outside pressure such as from the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps likely wanting a role in the process, due to the military body's influence on the Assembly of Experts.

while it should be noted that it goes against the Iranian constitution's laws regarding succession, it should also be noted that (A) nobody lives forever down here on Earth, and (B) the next Ayatollah of Iran may well turn out to be more moderate than Khamenei was and is.

which brings up my next question for all Iranians on this forum :
what *are* the laws of succession for the Ayatollah position in Iran?
