Iran threatens to block Strait of Hormuz over US oil sanctions
President signals Tehran could disrupt shipments, prompting warning from US military

A potential confrontation between the US and Iran is brewing in the Strait of Hormuz after Tehran threatened to block the Gulf passageway in retaliation for Washington’s looming sanctions against Iranian oil exports – a threat the US military said would be immediately countered.

The Trump administration is demanding all countries end imports of Iranian oil by 4 November as part of its new policy of hostility towards Tehran after Washington’s unilateral exit from the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Iran’s president, Hassan Rouhani, responded during a rare visit to Europe this week by signalling that Tehran could disrupt regional crude shipments and cut its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog.

On Thursday the commander of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards, whose forces patrol the Strait of Hormuz – through which one-fifth of the world’s oil passes in tankers – said the Guards were ready to put Rouhani’s words into action if necessary.

Mohammad Ali Jafari, the Guards commander, was quoted by the semi-official Tasnim news agency as saying: “We will make the enemy understand that either everyone can use the Strait of Hormuz or no one.”

Bill Urban, a spokesman for US Central Command, said Washington and its allies provided security in the region and would not stand idly by. “Together, we stand ready to ensure the freedom of navigation and the free flow of commerce wherever international law allows,” he said.

The threats will bring back memories of the latter years of the 1980s Iran-Iraq war, when US forces attacked Iranian territorial waters after a US ship struck an Iranian mine.

Rouhani returned to Tehran on Thursday after lobbying European leaders to deliver a robust rebuttal to the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal.

“The Americans have claimed they want to completely stop Iran’s oil exports. They don’t understand the meaning of this statement because it has no meaning for Iranian oil not to be exported while the region’s oil is exported,” Rouhani said this week in Switzerland.

“If you can do such a thing, do it and see the result,” Rouhani added in a threat that was lauded at home by the commander of the Quds force, Qassem Suleimani.

The fate of the nuclear deal is in the balance after Donald Trump pulled the US out of it in May before imposing new sanctions despite European resistance and Tehran’s adherence to the agreement, as verified multiple times by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Although the US initially demanded all countries end imports of Iranian oil in the autumn, it is likely to grant temporary exceptions to countries that rely heavily on Iranian crude such as China, India and Turkey.

though I know Rouhani's words are empty rhetoric, yet, it's interesting that how desparate he has become to follow Ahmadinejad's path and resort to military threats!

That would be a big big mistake, Iran should have and now also should play it's diplomatic cards right and just wait out Trump's era instead of confronting US. Iran should learn from Pakistan in this regards, if a conflict happens Iran will be a big loser.

The problem for rouhani is that when you try appeasement first and then have to resort to military threats it makes those threats,or at the very least your willingness to actually enforce them, seem just not very credible at all,and credibility is of utmost importance when one is making threats, especially threats of this nature.
I genuinely think that at this point it would be far better for everyone if rouhani just did the decent thing and threw himself on his political sword and resigned,so that new elections could be called.

The real question is, will it benefit Iran to close down the strait? I think it would just cause more harm. The US and Zionists own the media, they will make sure to portray us as hostile warmongers. Nobody would side with us if US attacks us and we won't receive any sympathy from Euros, most likely they will join the attack or pressure Iran to forfeit, which we will have to do in the end. This will only portray us as hostile, war mongers, losers, weak etc, we will even lose support from our own proxies when they see that we are getting kicked in the behind. And can't provide them with protection. Nothing good can come from closing down the strait. But thats just my opinion. Are there any Iranians here that favors closing down the strait and who actually thinks we have the power to do it?

I believe they can block the strait temporarily a month or 2 but it will have serious consequences . Basically without nukes backing our conventional army, there're serious risks of retaliation but add a nuke to the formula and voila the whole balance changes. IMO, the time to build nukes is now While "negotiation " drags on about whether EU will provide x y z or simply is stalling, we should use this window and build the damn nukes once and for all.

We can't go wrong if we use this negotiation time to build a nuke, it's a win-win situation no matter how you look at it. If negotiations doesn't bear any fruits, we gonna get sanctioned anyway or if negotiation does provide real benefits then we won't have to declare our nukes (it gets shelved) or if US steps up military provocation then again nukes becomes very handy as a deterrent. So as you see no matter how you look at it, nukes are a MUST at this point otherwise this regime is toast. There're lots of Iranian haters in our region, they like to see us destroyed or segmented hence it's in our vital interest to have those weapons.

The way Iran is fed up with USA and Europe I would like to see them do something......
