Iran Seeks Strategic Partnership with India

New Delhi: Iran has said it looks forward to a strategic and long-term partnership with India and that talks in New Delhi over payment for Iranian oil had yielded "good results".
Iranian parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, during his meeting with President Pranab Mukherjee, said that his country "looks forward to a strategic and long-term partnership with India. India and Iran come from same roots and their destinies are the same. A large area of cooperation is possible between the two countries".

President Mukherjee, while welcoming the Iranian parliamentary delegation, said: "India and Iran have a strong bilateral economic relationship and it needs to further deepen for the benefit of peoples of both the countries."

"We must work together to promote trade and economic links and increased people-to-people contacts between us and within the region," he said.

The president added that the "excellent" bilateral relations between both the countries have been strengthened through high level exchanges and regular engagement through various dialogue mechanisms.

Iran remains an important source of crude for India and Indian markets are open to Iranian exports. India hopes that Iran would source more goods from the country, said Mukherjee.

Later, answering a question at a press conference on the issue of payment for Iranian crude following western sanctions, Larijani said, "There have been people in my delegation who have been talking to their Indian friends, and this has had good results."

However, he declined to reveal details of the talks.

On Pakistan and Afghanistan, he said: "It is important for Pakistan to have a secure Afghanistan and we have held talks with Pakistani politicians and it seems they have come to understand this, it is good."

To a question if he would be the next president of Iran, he smilingly said: "You seem to be in too much of a rush."

On the progress of nuclear talks, held in Kazakhstan between Iran and six global powers, the speaker of the Majlis said: "There is no secret dimension to Iran's nuclear programme, and it can be resolved through dialogue."

"Iran is not worried about sanctions," Larijani said, adding that Iran has "good capacity to resist... Iran has skilled manpower, from biotechnologists, nanotechnologists, IT, to experts in stem cells… A country with $1,000 billion can find its own solutions. We want to be self reliant..we will survive this."

Does Iran supports India's role in Afghanistan? @Soheil

India and Iran backed Northern Alliance which is against Taliban during cold war era and after that. When it comes to Afghanistan Iran and India shared the same view in the past and also share the same in present day

The triangle here in Afganistan is India-Russia-Iran

Does India supports Iran's role in Afghanistan?

Both the countries share the same view and so the Chahabar port co operation for strategic and stable Afghanistan

Cooperation with Iran is beneficial for India  As it is we have stood by Iran from a long time now , neglecting the sanctions that might be imposed upon India by the West .
I am all up for a positive and healthy relation with a powerful and intelligent nearby country .

Dude, because of Iran, India can support Afghanistan.

So its obvious we appreciate Iran's role in stabilizing Afghanistan. :enjoy:

Keep feeding us with cheap oil and give us route to middle east..we will remain partners :D.

Although we have border with A-stan which is of more than 100 kms ;)

India is counting on Iran for a transit to Afghanistan, construction of Chabahar port has been a step in that direction, next step will be construction of railway routes to Afghanistan and beyond.

And not to forget, Iran and India will be a deterrent against Talibans post 2014. What is your take on this?

Is there any doubt about that?....But again....I am not sure about what is Iran's stance recently, but India should partner with anyone who can facilitate to do trade and business in Afghanistan....

Well Indo-Iran connection is for long time. Over 10,000 Iranian students study in India. We have cultural ties for such a long time.

They are rational and completely understand India's relations with other countries.

Dude..honestly speaking we are reading too much put of some statements and it may be little bit out of context to say that Iran sees strategic partnership with India...

That is bad for the our nighbours. They were questioning about alliance.

TBH, India is the only country that can melt the ice between Iran and other countries, mainly US, though the process will be time consuming.

All we need is trust between the governments and patience.

Actually buddy, post-2014, India and Iran have to work really hard to support peaceful Afghanistan so that both can trade with CARs.

Chahbhar port, road and rail connection is way much important for India, because we have economic interest in Afghanistan along with not allowing resurgence of Taliban and anti-India terrorist groups which are often sent to our borders.

Dude..it is not a matter about what Indian wants...rather it is other way around...I still can see that the progress on Chbabar is not significant as it has been projected...
