Iran’s Rafsanjani Calls for Improving Relations With Saudis

A senior Iranian official has called for his country to improve relations with Saudi Arabia, amidst a widening gulf between Sunni and Shia Muslims across the Middle East and the imposition of Western sanctions on Iran’s key oil sector.

Agence France Presse reported that Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a former president of Iran and current chairman of an advisory body to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has also called for the resumption of ties with the U.S.

“If we had good relations with Saudi Arabia, would the West have been able to impose sanctions?”, Rafsanjani said in International Studies Journal, an Iranian publication.

“Only Saudi Arabia could fill the void left by Iran. [All they have to do is] produce oil within their OPEC quota, and then no one would be able to harass us.

He added: “Relations with Saudi Arabia are not a trivial matter. I think it is still possible to form good relations. But there are people who do not want this... some harsh remarks coming from both sides should be corrected.”

Saudi Arabia’s relations with Iran have been frayed over the number of issues – Iran’s support of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad is only the latest. The Sunni-dominated Saudi government also finds itself increasingly at odds with the Shia Iranian regime over Iraq and Bahrain, as well as Riyadh’s relationship with the U.S.

The Saudis are reportedly greatly concerned by Iran’s alleged nuclear power ambitions and the impact of such a development on the Persian Gulf.

Moreover, Saudi Arabia has promised to maintain its high oil production in anticipation of a sharp reduction in Iranian oil exports once Western sanctions on Iran come into effect.

Rafsanjani, who lost the 2005 presidential election to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, also called for the resumption of diplomatic relations with the United States, which have been severed ever since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that deposed the Shah, a longtime U.S. ally.

“If we negotiate with them [Europe, China and Russia], why should we not talk with America? The meaning of negotiation is not that we submit to them. We negotiate, and if they accept our positions or we accept theirs, then it is done,” he explained.

Rafsanjani has long espoused the restoration of relations with the U.S., going back to the rule of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

However, given the dominance of hard-liners in Iran’s government, Rafsanjani’s conciliatory and moderate policy proposals have been largely rejected and marginalized by the Tehran establishment.

Saudis choosing Iran side over US? Get real. Not going to happen, regardless how hard Iran would try.

Saudis staying in power depends on US, therefore they have to follow US policy. As soon as Saudis would have independent policy, or God forbid, becomes Iran's ally - there would be a "color revolution" or coup by US in Saudi so fast, that heads would spin.

Your input is pretty disgusting to say the least.

KSA is an independent sovereign state. Not a US proxy in the region. Sure it is a US ally. But ally does not mean slave.

Although out governments dislike each other in most cases, but it's best in our interests to be neutral to each other if not allies.
Political An Ideological dissension between ME countries is in best interest of U.S and western countries.

In the world of politics you can chose both, especially given that the US can't exactly sanction KSA anyway, too reliant on it

Even if Iran and Saudis work out their differences as article suggests, Saudis side with Iran and would refuse to fill oil gap once Iran's exports are banned. All sanctions fall apart.

US absolutely wouldnt stand fully independent Saudis, lets look at the history:

a) Hussein was CIA agent, and was installed in Iraq by US. When he turned against US, he was killed.
b) Iran was under UK influence, but as soon as they became independent, coup in '53 by US to give all power to Shah. Once revolution happened, look how Iran is being treated. US is pushing for regime change by all means.
c) Gaddafi established friendly relationships with West, but once he turned against them - dead, his mutilated body is buried somewhere.
d) Taliban was once US ally, including Bin Laden. Need I continue?

Now lets look at Saudis - they are crucial oil supplier and a strategic partner, who follows US policies. US absolutely cant afford losing influence over such country, especially not in current situation. Its not like Saudis are pure democracy with no faults, it would be very easy for US to find reasons and get support for SA leadership change.

Lets look at realistic scenarios, assuming Saudis side with Iran:

US delegation immediately visits Saudis, with full mandate to use all means necessary to pursue Saudis to reverse its decision:

* Saudi ruler is coerced (by carrot or gun to his head, depending which works) and soon we'll hear "previous announcement was misunderstanding, we fully support US". (Most likely outcome)

* Saudi ruler refuses to cooperate further with US. He is removed from the power and replaced by his relative, who is more understanding from US perspective. (Also likely)

* All Saudis family grow independence and balls over night (good luck with that :azn:), and US would have to resort to "uprising" to change Saudis leadership. US doesnt have time to play revolutions in SA now, they need full Saudis support and uninterrupted oil flow, but if US have no other choice, they can activate this plan as well.

Bottom line: if anyone thinks US would allow Saudis slip from their influence just like that, is just kidding himself. History and current US actions speaks loud and clear.
