Tehran, February 28: Iran’s moderate President Hassan Rouhani is on course to make sweeping gains against conservatives in parliament according to partial election results which today showed his allies winning decisively in Tehran. The List of Hope, a pro-Rouhani coalition of moderates and reformists, is ahead in all but one of the capital’s 30 seats, with 44 per cent of votes counted.

The projected rout in Tehran was in marked contrast to earlier initial results from across the country which showed seats split between the main conservative list, Rouhani’s allies and independent candidates.Coming just a month after sanctions were lifted under Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers, the outcome of yesterday’s vote is being seen as a de-facto referendum on Rouhani’s administration.

The president joined forces with reformists to try and curtail conservative dominance of parliament and create space to pass social and political reforms on which he has so far been blocked.Early declarations published by the semi-official ISNA news agency, quoting electoral officials, suggested that no one faction would win a majority in parliament
Out of 56 constituencies outside the capital, 19 went to the main list of conservatives, nine to the pro-Rouhani list, and 14 to independent candidates.Of the independents six had ties to conservatives, five to reformists and three were undeclared. None of the remaining 14 seats had a clear winner, meaning a second round, not to take place until April or May, would be needed.

Turnout in the election was solid at 60 per cent, but slightly less than the 64 per cent of 2012.There was further good news for the president in the second election that took place yesterday, for the Assembly of Experts, a powerful committee of clerics that monitors the work of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Rouhani and his close ally Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a former two-term president, held the first two places among the 28 clerics seeking one of the 16 places reserved on the assembly for Tehran.Thirteen of those on the Rouhani-Rafsanjani list for the assembly were in the top 16, with around one third of votes counted.

because the high number of votes and they still don't use electronic system for voting .
A lot countries dont use electronic voting but you can still follow the result live on the same day after the ballots are closed.

well, you are welcome to try to count the votes of Tehran in one day just imagine each person select 30 candidate and there are around 4 million voter just only in Tehran ,it mean they must count 120,000,000 vote and that's only for parliament , but they also must count assembly of expert election votes at the same time which make their job twice as hard.

In the 2009 elections, one of the reasons western media claimed fraud was that we counted so fast, and they thought that was not possible.

Damned if we do, damned if we don't.

By voting to rafsanjani , tehranis vote to curroption .....

in 2009 there was many other problem for example votes of rezaee shrinking instead of increasing . or in many boxes the vote count being a multiplication of 50 and so but honestly the main problem was that sadly people decided not to hear reason . they said may world is true and the other are wrong , in short they missed the real point and they forget what is at stake.

no doubt that rafsanjani is not an ideal candidate but you can say so to many others from different parties.

Rafsanjani is symbol of government totalitarian policies and corruptions ... others well useless ( like Hadad Adel ) but they weren't symbol of anything ...
they should put a age limit for Parliament and Assembly of Experts election ...

These old guys should step aside and let youth to come to power ...

this I can agree on. Not only that , I believe guardian councils members and president also must have an age limit.

Why would you need to count 120 million votes when you only have 4 million voters and what do you mean by each person selecting 30 candidates, does that mean each person gives 30 votes or something else, im confused. :what:

tehrani's are fools they think this assembly is gonna appoint the new supreme leader , while i think ayyatollah hamenei will live to the age of 92

Number of candidates in each city is base on its population ... therefore in Tehran we have 30 parliamentary seats to be voted electors must write the full names of candidates + their codes they support on the ballot paper. In the capital, this means voters should write the names of 30 candidates on the ballot for parliament and 16 candidates for the Assembly of Experts, 8.5 Million were eligible to vote by a simple math you could figure out the number of votes that should be counted ... 368 million votes just in Tehran if full participation takes place ...
