Iran Officially Bans American Goods

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Minister of Industry, Mine, and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh has issued a directive to prohibit the import and distribution of any consumer goods made in the United States.

Yadollah Sadeqi, head of Iran’s Center for Guilds and Trade, announced that Nematzadeh issued the directive earlier this week, and that importing and distributing US consumer goods will no longer be permitted.

The Iranian official further pointed to certain contracts signed with two American companies for the import of US-made cigarettes and soft drinks, and stressed that these contracts have been inked by the private sector not the government.

No license is issued for American brands to operate in Iran even if there has been any such a thing in the past, he added.

Sadeqi also referred to the recent shutdown of a restaurant in Tehran named KFC, and reiterated that the Iran-based fast food restaurant did not have any link to the American fast food chain, KFC.

The promising prospect of trade with Iran following the recent nuclear agreement between Tehran and world powers has prompted giant American firms, among those from other countries, to explore the market potential in the populous Middle East nation.

While many consider the JCPOA – the finalized text of the agreement- a major breakthrough in the improvement of ties between Iran and the West, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei has made it clear that Tehran’s policy towards the US will remain unchanged.

In a speech in August, Ayatollah Khamenei underlined that Iran acts “decisively” to block Washington’s abuse of the outcomes of the nuclear talks, noting, “With all our strong capabilities, we will not allow Americans’ economic, political or cultural infiltration or political presence in Iran.”

With all due respect to our government, this is bullcrap. Already we have many American goods entering the country via Dubai & Turkey. Let's see if they confiscate all the iphones in Iran.

Meanwhile American goods ruling on the streets of Tabriz!! before lift of the sanctions...

We don't need American sports cars or fast food! We do need Airplanes! We need industrial Machinery!
We need to be able to join international research programs! We need serious investment in our huge petrochemical industry! We need TOT. With these we can expect economical growth, not Junk foods.

With what I see,to me, lift of the sanctions looks just like a bitter joke!

The problem is the US has sanctioned Iran for 36 years and Iran doesn't want to give the US economic benefits while they haven't lifted sanctions and they're supporting anti Iranian terrorists and Israel in the region. We shouldn't have crappy American restaurants while Iranian restaurants give us much more benefits. Other than American foods Iran must ban pricey American cars.

The Iranian government is ordered to empower local producers.
Iran has labeled more than 200 goods made in the US ahead of the much-anticipated lifting of sanctions which could trigger an influx of foreign products.

The Trade Promotion Organization of Iran has published the names of 227 goods subject to an import ban and sent the list to authorities in all the 31 provinces across the country in a directive to implement the boycott.

The list includes an assortment of goods, ranging from chewing gums, cigarettes and appliances to defense equipment such as tanks and armored vehicles, the Tasnim news agency reported on Monday.

The labeling comes in the wake of an order last month by Minister of Mine, Industry and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh for a ban on the entry of US consumer goods.

In October, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei wrote to President Hassan Rouhani, urging the government to develop an “economy of resistance” and check the imports of US-made goods.

The Leader wrote the letter to outline his conditional approval of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action -- Iran’s nuclear accord reached in July with the US, Europe, Russia and China.

Ayatollah Khamenei also instructed the government to stop "unbridled imports" and entry of all goods from the United States when sanctions are lifted.

US products often find their way into the Iranian marketplace through back channels. There are other routes such as licensing workarounds and direct trade for goods not covered by US sanctions which result in American products ending up in the Iranian market.

US food and beverages such as Coca-Cola and Pepsi have local bottlers and distributors in Iran, but they say they have nothing to do with the American brands.
