Iran has invited Tajik President Emomali Rahmon to attend the forthcoming summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran in late August.

Vice president Lotfollah Forouzandeh extended Iranian chief executive Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s invitation to President Rahmon in the Tajik capital, Dushanbe, on Friday.

“The NAM summit provided an opportunity for heads of states to exchange views on common issues and reach agreement [on them],” Forouzandeh said after the meeting.

He called on member states to use NAM’s favorable potential and the good opportunity provided by Iran's presidency of the organization for the next three years “to convey their message to the world community.”

The Iranian official said that he also discussed bilateral ties with the Tajik president, adding that both sides called for the further expansion of relations.

He said that Tehran and Dushanbe needed to expand cooperation on global issues to help raise the status of the two countries in the international arena.

The 16th NAM summit will be held on August 26-31 in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Iran will receive the rotating presidency of the movement from Egypt for three years during the Tehran summit.

An international organization with some 120 member states and 17 observer countries, NAM represents nearly two-thirds of the UN members.
