Iran, India Sign Major Rail Deal
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran and India have signed a deal worth 2 billion US dollars for cooperation in the rail sector, a report said.

The agreement was inked Friday in India's capital New Delhi in the presence of Abbas Akhoundi, Iran's minister of roads and urban development, and his Indian counterpart Nitin Gadkari, the report said, according to Xinhua news agency.

The deal included a memorandum of understanding (MoU) worth 600 million dollars that will enable Iran to purchase locomotives and freight cars from India.

Akhoundi said the project will be fully implemented within three years.

For his part, Gadkari said the new trains will help transport passengers and freight in Iran.

"They will also be used in the Chabahar-Zahedan railroad to accelerate development of the Chabahar Port in line with India's goal to connect to Central Asia and ultimately Europe through this Iranian port," he said.

Iran and India, two major members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), have increased efforts in recent years to establish closer trade ties.

India is one of the major customers of Iran’s crude oil.

There is a similar locomotive MoU with Russia and maybe Italy . there was talks few weeks ago with Canada and other countries regarding locomotives and rails .for sure we have the capability to complete little bit of these contracts alone but we don't have enough time,money,manpower and tech to build them all on our own .

MoU does not have value

iphones is not the same as Locomotives.

Jokes aside, MoU has no values in itself. But it's an initialization step. And Iran is a relatively new player in manufacturing Engines for locomotives and it's normal for a country to buy from other markets, saves them a lot of time and resources. While we have been doing it for a long time and we manufacture rolling stocks for ourselves.

India has offered LHB coaches capable of travelling upto 225 kph (with correct locomotive). These have anti-telescopic feature (which means they wont climb on each other during accident but rather sway sideways) and are all Stainless Steel Construction.

Further there is a proposal to supply 4500 HP, 3 phase Diesel locomotives (akin to WDP 4D class already operating in India).

Iranian Railways use Standard Gauge (4'81/2") track width meanwhile Zahedan-Chabahar rail link is based on Broad Gauge (5'6") as used by India/Pakistan. India being the largest producer of Broad Gauge equipment in the region is the obvious choice because it doesn't make sense for Iran to manufacture Broad Gauge equipment, while it's whole railway system is based on Standard Gauge.

There is a plan to connect Chabahar port to Mashhad . right now after Tehran , Mashhad is second important city . who knows maybe next decade Mashhad will be the most important city of Iran

“Two-thirds of the contract are financed by the Chinese government with a very low-interest rate. And the remaining one-third is covered by Chinese insurer Sinosure (China Export and Credit Insurance Corporation Asghar Fakhrieh-Kashan, who oversees Iranian firms’ talks with international businesses, told Financial Tribune in an exclusive interview.

“Issues regarding the government guarantees were resolved during Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Ali Tayyebnia’s recent visit to China,” he added.

That depends based on the region and the kind of rail service (long distance or suburban or luxury and so on).
But the answer is yes in most cases. Railways run a lot on electricity and our service obviously focuses on low cost and less profit unlike the West.

Say I want to travel from southern India to central India. If I'm low on cash (or not), there's no question about it, train. And the scenery is gorgeous too.
The only reason I'd take bus to a neighbouring city would be connectivity, since railway stations may not be where we want it to be.
