Iran in the forefront when it comes to stem cell research

CNN

In our Behind the Scenes series, CNN correspondents share their experiences covering news and analyze the stories behind the events.

Tehran, IRAN (CNN) -- It is a country where the call to prayer echoes throughout the capital every morning, where women must cover their heads at all times, where a Supreme Leader has the final say over everything.

But when it comes to stem cell research, Iran is cutting edge. Iran has some of the most liberal laws on stem cell research. Scientists say the clergy here define life as beginning three months after conception, which gives scientists access to human embryonic stem cells left over from fertilization trials.

Scientists here are testing treatments on mice for everything from heart disease to multiple sclerosis. And they claim to have successfully cloned a sheep last month and that the sheep is still alive. Foreign observers have been invited to verify the claim.

We traveled both to a government run laboratory and a private hospital in Tehran. Men and women were laboring over microscopes and Petri dishes. And all told us things that most scientists in the West would envy. "It's quite open, we can do our work very easily, we don't have any restriction, any problem," one of the country's leading stem cell researchers told me.

Iranian history, going back to the Persian empire, is laced with scientific achievements and one doctor told me, "the scientists would now like to go back to this era and for this reason young scientists are really excited."

The new-found pride is not just about stem cells. It's also about nuclear energy. The fact that Iranian scientists figured out how to enrich uranium without having to do so in a foreign country is a big reason the people and politicians say they won't back down from the United Nations' demands to stop.

It seems science of all kinds is pushing ahead in Iran without pause.

I am very happy that atleast one country has liberal laws on stem cell research.Good Luck to Iranian scientists.

But the statement abt uranium enrichment is Hogwash. If they learnt that by themselves what was A Q Khan selling them? Peanuts??

And the statment that Indians have learnt to read and write by themselves is hogwash, after all the Egyptians and Chinese taught everyone.

HAHAHAHAHAHA
You both made me laugh heartily dears.
This is internationalism and global market at its best, in both cases. :)

Got any proof of that??
A Q Khan himself confessed to selling nuclear knowhow to Iran and u'r own president confirmed that.

My point was that giving a few centrifuges doenst mean that Pakistan suddenly taught Iran all about nuclear technology. Over time technology diffuses on its own, much like the technology of "writing" spread from the Egyptians and Chinese to engulf all of the world today.

Centrifuge designs. Everything else they knew already.

Islam unlike Christianity does not oppose stem cell research. As long we use only use aborted embryos before 3 months of pregnancy. Abortion should not be intentional for the sake of selling the embryo. There are plenty to go around, unfortunately.

We cannot bring harm to potential life.

Islam, btw, also supports in vitro fertilization as long as no surrogate mother is used.

Contrary to what people make it seem, Islam is a very modern religion, that does not exclude science but finds conformity with science.

Exectly, if you read the Quran with understanding, you will see that Quran actully supports science unlike every other religon on the planet. Quran has 6000+ versus, out of which about a 1000 versus are about science. That's about 1/6 of the Quran :banana2: . It was the islamic scholars who were the first ones to use the globe when the whole world still thought that the world was flat. From the birth of a child to the universe, Quran has it all. Infact in switzalnd, there was a medicence patented. It had something to do with blindness, and was taken form the Quran. I will try to find the article and will post it here.

What is this all about?

I'm getting the same message. And "quick reply" panel is also missing.

Will someone please contact the stem cell research departments in Pakistan and let them know Iran has offered to aid Pakistan in developing this technology. We have oppertunity literally on our door step and were not taking it.
Best of all its without preconditions (take that America ;))

I am serious if you know someone thats into this in Pakistan or know the number please do make the effort.
