Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will pay a visit to neighboring Pakistan in the coming days to take part in a ministerial meeting of D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation.
Zarif plans to hold talks with senior Pakistani authorities as well as officials from other member states of the group, who will attend the 34th Session of D-8 Commission and the 16th Session of D-8 Council of Ministers in Islamabad from December 17 to 19.
Ali Mohammad Mousavi from Iran is the current secretary general of the organization.
In a meeting with Mousavi on October 8, Zarif said the group plays a leading role in the expansion of South-South cooperation, expressing Tehran’s full readiness to boost ties with the body.
D-8, also known as Developing-8, was officially founded on June 15, 1997, for the promotion of cooperation on development. The organization consists of Iran, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.
The D-8 objectives are to improve the position of member states in the global economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at international level, and improve standards of living in the member states.
The group, with a population of one billion people, has a combined market value of one trillion dollars. The alliance is determined to boost its trade volume to USD 500 billion by 2018.
