Iran Eyes Strategic Ties with India

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan highlighted the far-reaching impacts of military and defense cooperation with India on regional security, stressing that Tehran and New Delhi could work together at a strategic level.
“Promotion of cooperation between Iran and India in the political, military and security fields could remarkably help upgrade the regional security status and would have a significant effect on enhancement of sustainable peace and stability,” the Iranian defense minister said in a meeting with his Indian counterpart Arun Jaitley, held in Moscow.

Dehqan also called for promotion of the bilateral ties to “a strategic level”, saying Iran and India can interact in the fight against extremism, terrorism, narcotics trafficking, and piracy, and can also exchange experiences in various fields.

For his part, Jaitley highlighted India’s decisive approach against terrorism, saying New Delhi sees no obstacles to cooperation with Tehran in the anti-terror efforts.

The ground in now prepared for closer defense and security cooperation between Iran and India, he added.

The two ministers are in Russia to attend the 6th Moscow Conference on International Security (MCIS).

Counterterrorism and counterradicalism in the Middle East, security of information space, and security in Central Asia are in the spotlight of separate discussion sessions of the conference.

Iran, India’s MoD's call for joint coop. against terrorism

TEHRAN, Apr. 26 (MNA) – Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan and his Indian counterpart Arun Jaitley met on the sidelines of Moscow security conference to stress the need for a decisive fight against terrorism.


During the meeting, Brig. Gen. Dehghan highlighted the many cultural and civilizational commonalities for mutual corporation, as well as the geopolitical and geostrategic importance of the two countries, adding “boosting the level of cooperation between Iran and India in political, military and security fields can help tremendously with the improvement of regional security indexes and the expansion of sustainable peace and security all across the region.”

The Iranian defense minister noted the various mutual grounds for cooperation between the two countries including fight against terrorism, extremism, drugs trafficking, and piracy, as well as exchanging experiences in various fields, calling for further expansion of ties to the strategic level.

Indian Defense Minister Jaitley, for his part, maintained that the common history and civilization has created a bilateral interest on both sides for expansion of relations in all areas related to the preservation of regional security.

Stressing that New Delhi recognizes no distinction between different forms of terrorism, adding “every condition is ready to expand cooperation with Iran in defense and security spheres and talks and meetings between the two countries’ defense officials are of great importance in this regard.”

The 6th Moscow Conference on International Security will be held in the Russian capital on 26-27 April, with 700 representatives from 80 countries including Iran in attendance. According to Dehghan, discussion during the conference include fight against terrorism, cyberspace, and various regional developments.

"Strategic ties" with India is the first step towards "strategic ties" with the USA. Given that India has already signed the LEMOA and thus the US military can use Indian bases whenever they want.

Maybe this is the start of an Iranian rapproachment towards the USA. Trump has zero principles, and has flip-flopped on every major issue, so it's a good a time as any.

Our relations with Persia in many milleniums old and still we enjoy warm relations with them ... people to people contact with Iranians is better then with any other country in our neighbor hood ...
