After 39 days of heavy operations, Iranian riggers have succeeded in putting out the massive blaze caused by an oil well explosion in Naftshahr.

Teams from the National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC) specialized in extinguishing petroleum-based fires managed to control the blaze at Naftshahr oil well in the Iranian province of Kermanshah on Tuesday, IRNA reported.

A gas leak at the Naftshahr oil well was the cause of the massive blast on May 29 in which three people working at the site were killed and 12 others injured.

According to NIDC managing director Heydar Bahmani, experts believe that it should have taken some six months to extinguish an oil well blaze similar to Naftshahr.

Meanwhile, chairman of Iran's Central Oil Fields Company, Mehdi Fakour, said, "The gas leak has decreased in the area during the past two or three days."

Fakour further expressed Iran's readiness to "export capability and technical and engineering know-how to the US and western Europe to deal with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico," Fars News Agency reported on Tuesday.

Head of Parliament's (Majlis) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, said in June that Iran was ready to employ its expertise in containing oil spills to put an end to the "environmental catastrophe" in the Gulf of Mexico.

"Despite the aggressive US stance toward the Iranian nation, Iran is ready to help put an end to the spill because of the severity of the environmental catastrophe," Boroujerdi said.
