The Iranian judiciary officially placed a moratorium on stoning in 2002, although the punishment remained on the books, and there were a few cases of Judges handing down stoning sentences in 2006 and 2007.[25] In 2008, Iran's judiciary decided to fully scrap the punishment from the books in a legislation submitted to parliament for approval.[26] As of June 2009, Iran's parliament has been reviewing and revising the Islamic penal code to omit stoning as a form of punishment.[27]
In Iran, stoning as a punishment did not exist until 1983, when the contemporary Islamic Penal Code was ratified. Many Muslim jurists in Iran are of the opinion that while stoning can be considered Islamic, the criteria under which it can be imposed as a sentence are stringent: Because of the large burden of proof needed to reach a guilty sentence of adultery, its penalty is hardly ever applicable.
Furthermore, while legally on the books, because of vociferous domestic and international controversy and outcry over stoning in the early years of the Islamic republic, the government placed official moratoriums on the punishment and, as a result, it was rarely practiced. Nevertheless, much of the public was outraged that such a practice instituted in the laws of the country.[25] In 2002, Iran's judiciary indicated that stoning will no longer be practiced in Iran.[25] However, following the election of Ahmadinejad, there were reports of judges handing down stoning sentences in 2006 and 2007. Finally, in 2008, Iran's judiciary decided to scrap the punishment of stoning in draft legislation submitted to parliament for approval.[26] The Iranian judiciary spokesman Jamal Karimirad was quoted as saying "Stoning has been dropped from the penal code for a long time, and in the Islamic republic, we do not see such punishments being carried out", further adding that if stoning sentences were passed by lower courts, they were over-ruled by higher courts and "no such verdicts have been carried out."[28]

And have we forgotten about this?

First.we never said Arabs (in General) are backward. At least i as an Iranian haven't said such thing.I am against some laws in countries like SA,for example banning of driving for women or beheading punishment.
Second,HDI is not the only measure for showing who is more advanced or not.For example Turkey is also behind Saudi Arabia,Jamaica or Barbados, does it mean Turkey is a backward country?

About stoning punishment, well there is no stoning punishment in Iran for over 6 years, actually i am extremely against it and i don't see any 'Islamic' sign in it, fortunately they scraped the punishment from the law.We have a long way ahead to become a developed nation.

I hope you got my point.

I think we have had our fair share Iran v Saud threads guys - Lets just agree to disagree on certain issues and dilute a bit of this hatred - really guys its a bit too much........

I disagree, because if harsh punishments had any influence,we wouldn't see high crime rates in developing countries.it is not right the way.
For example Norway has one one of the most moderate punishment systems in the world,it doesn't have capital punishment and still it has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. That rings a bell for you?

No one needs to argue about this at all. If we were to assume that the posters on the forum have Iranian flags or Arab flags represent a cross section of their respective nations. Its very easy by reading past posts you should be able to get a good idea of what's what and makes up you own minds. I will keep to myself the conclusions that I come to about who is rational and or not lol
