Hoping an entire country drowns to death? How enlightened of you.

They should seek refuge in Pakistan or Bangladesh. Their extremist version of Islam is dangerous for India. Either drown with your Wahabism or go to some like minded country. Even Sri Lanka would not accept them.

Government expresses concern over protest’s call for “slaughter and murder”

By Hawwa Lubna | December 12th, 2011

A coalition of religious NGOs and opposition parties organising a religious protest on December 23 have launched a social media campaign and website, which this morning contained a list objectives including to “fight against all un-Islamic ideas” and to “slaughter anyone against Islam”.

The website, 23December.com, was launched by the President of the Adhaalath Party Imran Abdullah and includes news updates on the protest and religious articles aimed at promoting the event.

The list of slogans published on the site initially included statements such as: “Today’s law is to slaughter anyone against Islam”, and a call to “take the life” of anyone who challenged Islam “regardless of their party affiliation”.

The calls for violence were subsequently removed from the website, but not before the government expressed “deep concern” that “some people are using religion as a tool to call for murder and violence.”

“They are calling for slaughter and murder,” said President Mohamed Nasheesd’s Press Secretary, Mohamed Zuhair, urging “relevant authorities” to take action.

The organisers of the protest have accused the government of conducting many activities “with the motive of erasing Islam from the country”, claiming that they were “left with no other choice but to protest to protect Islam.”

The coalition claims that 100,000 people will join the December 23 protest “to protect Islam”, and called on “all Maldivians to take part”.

The website includes a list of grievances concerning the government’s religious credentials.

Zuhair meanwhile rejected the accusations and said that the government had no intention of erasing Islam or introducing other religions to the Maldives.

He noted that it was Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) that had introduced the concept of freedom of assembly to the Maldives, and that the government will always “welcome the people to gather and raise their voices on matters that concern them”.

“But I am being informed this particular demonstration has been called for political purposes with a hidden agenda to topple the government,” Zuhair said.

Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam told Minivan News that police had received a complaint about the slogan on the website calling for murder. However, he did not comfirm whether police were investigating it.

He did not reveal whether police intended to take any special security measures during the protest.
Minivan News could not get the comment from organisers of the protest at the time of press. However, Abdullah Mohamed, a senior member organising the protest, was earlier quoted in newspaper Haveeru as saying that the slogans calling for slaughter were “a mistake”.

According to Abdullah, the slogans were submitted by some participants of the protest, and were uploaded to the website without being checked properly.

Speaking to Minivan News, Former State Minister of Islamic Affairs Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said that the slogan calling for murder was “not good”, adding that “Islam is a religion of peace, not of violence”.

He acknowledged that “There are things I do not agree with when it comes to the government’s religious policies,” however said that he believed the President Nasheed would correct matters if the public called for change.

He noted that he was not playing a lead role in organising the protest, but said he always supported peaceful assembly to voice the concerns of the people. He added that people must only speak of religion based on the Quran and Prophet’s Sunnah.

The Maldives has recently come under increasing international scrutiny following an apparent rise in religious intolerance.

Police investigating a violent attack on a ‘silent protest’ calling for religious tolerance, held at the Artificial Beach to mark Human Rights Day on December 10.

Several monuments gifted to the Maldives by other SAARC countries during the recent summit in Addu have been defaced or stolen on the grounds that they were idolatrous. Islamic Minister Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari has condemned the monuments while the opposition has hailed the vandals as “national heroes”.

Protests also erupted last month after UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay spoke in parliament calling for the government and the judiciary to issue a moratorium and debate on flogging as a punishment for extra-marital sex.

“This practice constitutes one of the most inhumane and degrading forms of violence against women and should have no place in the legal framework of a democratic country,” Pillay said.

“The issue needs to be examined, and therefore I called for a countrywide discussion. It is much better if the issue is transparent and debated.”

Pillay also stated that requirement under the Maldivian constitution that all Maldivians be Muslim ”is discriminatory, and does not comply with international standards. I would urge a debate again on the issue to open up entrance of the constitution to all.”

The following day protesters gathered outside the UN building, carrying placards stating “Islam is not a toy”, “Ban UN” and “Flog Pillay”, and called on authorities to arrest the UN High Commissioner.

Maldives president condemns Islamic protest

(AP) – 30 minutes ago

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — The president of Maldives has condemned a protest planned by an Islamic party against what it calls anti-Islamic activities in the country.

A government statement Monday quoted President Mohamed Nasheed as saying that the real goal of the protest is the introduction of Islamic penalties such as stoning, amputations and executions.

Nasheed defended working women and said Maldives should continue to practice a moderate form of Islam that allows recreation, sports and music.

Several organizations that campaign for strict Islamic rules including the Adaalath or Justice Party are calling for the protest Friday.

The country of 300,000 people forbids practice of religions other than Sunni Islam.

I must say i never had a clue that Maldives was that crazy.

That's funny mate since your countrymen have some of the worst mistreatment there despite being Muslims. They are discriminated, taunted and racist slurs are made against Bangladeshis. I am sure you would come across many expat Bangladeshis who will tell you their negative experience in that country.

I and my buddies being Indians had issues there despite the fact that they are managed by our embassy. Imagine otherwise.

And this has nothing to do with Wahhabism, religious conservatism is not religious extremism.

It does. Because before Gayum's rule, Maldives was very liberal. It kept Islam as a private matter between man and Supreme. After that man, everything changed. Mullas dictate the island nation; any Maldivian choosing other religion is expelled (since by law all Maldivian nationals have to be Muslims), women are handed harsh punishments for things there is no proof on, their population is far away from their tourism related island resorts etc.

The UN only called end to flogging. And it is not even mandate.

What about the ceremonial monuments that were raised for SAARC meetings? These people destroyed that too calling it "idolism" or whatever nonsense. Now just imagine this level of brainwashed attitude.

They might as well use the Indian Navy to "teach them a lesson"

Well that would be too much to be honest. Once their president's brother claimed an island of ours. But that as peacefully solved. While Maldivians are not hostile as a nation, as people they are very rude, brash and contrary to what you would expect in a tourism-dependent nation.

Cut out the rubbish. Have you even been to Maldives at all? Just incase you didn't know, there's a significant number of Bangladeshi MUSLIM immigrants there who are mistreated very badly despite being of the same religion as the locals. Which would put you also on a same pedestal because honestly, even you Pakistanis especially from big cities like Lahore and Islamabad would be considered "too liberal" there.

Believe me; their attitudes are not as beautiful as their islands.

The Intolerant Constitution

By Yameen Rasheed

In 1959, an expedition of historians unearthed an exquisitely carved ancient statue of Gautama Buddha from the island of Thoddoo.

Buried under slabs of stones, possibly to protect it from being demolished along with the the temples following the Islamization of the Maldives in 1153 AD, the statue was a priceless archaeological find.

Before long, however, the island was gripped with controversy. ‘The religion of worshipping statues has begun!’, some islanders were described as saying, according to the book ‘A New Light on the History of Maldives’.

One early dawn soon after its discovery, the ancient statue was found decapitated by vandals.

The statue was then taken to Male’ and displayed at Mulee’aage, the current Presidential residence. Before the week had ended, another mob barged in and smashed it to pieces leaving behind just the serenely smiling head, which is now displayed in the National Museum in Male’.

The Prime Minister at the time, strong-man Ibrahim Nasir, who didn’t hesitate to personally lead gunboats to forcefully depopulate the island of Thinadhoo following the southern rebellion, knew better than to investigate the vandalism.

It was simply pointless, because half a century later, unidentified vandals would proceed to smash, burn and destroy the SAARC-gifted monuments in Addu, for allegedly being ‘idols of worship’.

Comment: The Intolerant Constitution*|*Minivan News

Just like Nasir, the modern Maldivian politician knows better than to challenge the deep-rooted fear of ‘other religions’ that is so firmly ingrained in the Maldivian psyche.

On the other hand, it makes for a great political gimmick.

Quite tellingly, the ruling party, seven opposition parties and a network of 127 NGOs are all planning to protest on December 23 in order to renew their vows against allowing ‘other religions’ in the Maldives.

It seems a rather redundant cause, considering the 2008 Maldivian constitution already forbids non-Muslims from becoming citizens, and mandates that the nation remain 100% Sunni Muslim.

Winds Of Radical Islam Reach Maldives – Analysis

Certain recent events in the Maldives attributed to Islamic hardliners and their opportunistic political supporters need the attention of the Indian authorities. These events indicate support from small sections of the population for an Islamic campaign in favour of an ideology that seems to have been inspired by that of the Taliban of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The number of people supporting this ideological campaign is still small, but the fact that these forces, however small, have established a base for their activities in a country known for its tolerant society should be a matter of concern.
