Interview: Serbia-China partnership never been stronger than today

(Xinhua)10:11, October 10, 2011 BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said Sunday that the Serbia-China partnership has never been stronger than today.

The foreign minister, who is in Beijing to chair the Serbia-China Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation Session, said China is viewed as one of Serbia's best friends in the world by its government and people.

"If I would have to describe our relationship in one word, I would use the word excellent," he said, saying the mutual support between Serbia and China has reached to an absolute level, which is "full, unequivocal, unreserved and unconditional".

He believes the bilateral relationship will get better and stronger, because the Serbian government is fully committed to strengthening the relationship in the decades to come.

The two countries have witnessed frequent, high-level exchanges this year.

In 2011, Serbian Parliament speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic and Chief of the General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces Miloje Miletic visited China respectively, while Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Xu Caihou and Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi also paid visits to Serbia.

Jeremic said the frequent, high-level exchanges have generated bilateral cooperation in nearly all fields.

The timing is perfect for Serbia and China to foster economic cooperation, he said, mentioning particularly two joint construction projects -- the Zemun-Borca Bridge over the Danube river and the Kostolac thermal generating plant.

"We are going to witness a dramatic increase in the depth, breadth and quality of our economic engagement," he said.

Jeremic has visited China every single year since he took office in 2007. In 2008, he attended the opening ceremony of Beijing Olympic Games, while in 2010, he inaugurated the Serbian Pavilion at Shanghai World Expo.

He said it is amazing to see China changing from year to year, noting that they are among the most visibly dynamic changes he has ever seen.

As a big tennis fan, the minister expressed pity that Serbian player Novak Djokovic had to withdrawal from the China Open and the Shanghai Rolex Masters, but he was excited to hear that Serbian Nenad Zimonjic won the men's doubles championship at the China Open with his French partner Michael Llodra.

"Sports is a very useful field, where people and countries can grow closer and generate good will, trust and friendship," he said.
