"South Korea was once again the only country with an average connection speed of over 20 Mbps (megabits per second)...Among the remaining surveyed countries, the lowest average connection speed was seen in India, at 1.5 Mbps," Akamai's State of the Internet Report said.

Akamai analysed 17,844,839 connections in India for the study. The study said the average peak connection speed in India was 10.9 megabits per second. At this speed, a file with a size equivalent to a Bollywood movie can be downloaded in about nine minutes.

Though there is no regulation of connection speeds in the country, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has decided to prescribe a minimum rate for wireless internet services.

Telecom operators have reported to the TRAI that minimum download speeds delivered on their most high-speed 3G services range between 399 kbps (less than the minimum broadband speed of 512 kbps) to 2.48 Mbps.

The study also found that India had the lowest rate of high broadband adoption among qualifying countries, at 0.4%, even after a 31% cent quarterly increase. There were 58 million broadband subscribers in the country at the end of February, according to TRAI data.

India has set a target of 175 million broadband connections by 2017 and 600 million by 2020 at a minimum 2 Mbps download speed and making available higher speeds of at least 100 Mbps on demand.

Providers AU-1 in Australia and HK-3 in Hong Kong both recorded average peak connection speeds greater than 100 Mbps, according to the report. "These speeds may indicate that providers are starting to roll out 'LTE Advanced' (4G) technology, which can enable peak data rates of 150 Mbps or 300 Mbps," the report said.

Airtel, Reliance Jio Infocomm, Vodafone and Idea Cellular plan to start 4G services in the country. Airtel has already rolled out the service in 6-7 cities.

very true. only in major cities ISP's cater to. BSNL pretty much failed with landline broadband atleast in Kerala. 3G or highspeed CDMA lik mts/reliance are the only (un)reliable option. Reliance, airtel or other wired broadband services are limited to city region as it is their policy while states like Kerala needs village level penetration as a large customer base exists. ISP's generalize their policies based on markets like Maharashtra cities,Bangalore and other metros. that will not work for every state. in case of BSNL in my place, it was found that BSNL OFC's are purposefully cut in many places while laying IDEA(Aditya BIrla group) OFC's. Idea is the no.1 3g service, expensive too. BSNL 3g coverage is good only in *some* cities. we are really lagging behind other countries. Bombay or Delhi or Madras are not the yardstick.
I got BSNL broadband facility in 2003 or so it worked fine(till 2011-12) until some major OFC laid under a state highway developed problems. BSNL(A Public undertaking) Engineers denied repairing the same. because, as per them there is a contract or court verdict something which prevents digging up the state highway. now, I rely on 3G for net. no broadband. No Beam telecom or such pvt ISP's they are restricted to 3 or 4 big metros. I live near Cochin,Kerala JFYI. we have no good broadband ISP's except for big cities.

BSNL Sucks :hitwall:
Same time you will get 300+ kbps downloading speed and in few second it can drop to 10-30 kbps :cray:

Damn. It's high time BEAM telecom should launch it's services all over the country. The best Broadband operator AFAIK

BSNL is landline or wireless???

I myself hate wireless networks and prefer landline connection. PTCL evo gives 300+ kbps downloading speed but speed drop time to time. PTCL landline however is better option.

BSNL is national Telecom service provider including landline, broadband, cellular services including data(3g), Wi-max,CDMA(data- EVDO and voice),FTTH etc. the common broadband is via landphone(what we call!) through underground cables. the service was OK for almost a decade. but, now it is bad.

In my town only Wired available but BSNL also provide wireless service in cities. I use Wifi Router to work with my Ipad, Smartphone and laptop. Sometime i use cable with my laptop. BSNL is only broadband provider in my town :cray: I am paying 1350rs per month for this SHIT :hitwall:

4 mbps is more than enough i guess
what matters is the connectivity

So I will have a problem streaming and/or downloading **** in India? That put dampers on my plans to visit India...
