International Mathematical Olympiad 2015 results (India crashes and burns again)

This is surprising; Iran, Syria, Russia, Canada, Mexico, Hungary all topped Pakistan.
If that's not messed up than idk what is.

. .
You expect Iran usually rank higher? I think the 7th spot is already a good result for Iran judging from the record found at
International Mathematical Olympiad

I did not say it's bad but it seems to me looking at the past that Iran has seen seriously underachieving. I expect Iranians to be in atleast top five. Iranians have great mathematical abilities, have even won a mathes field prize recently.

You're surprised Iran ranked higher? When was the last time Pakistan ranked higher than Iran?

What's up with the title?

Not at all, I am from IIT, when I was writing IIT exams these Olympiads or PISA exams never crossed my mind. The same thing with my classmates too. Indians will not work hard on things that won't fetch them profits. Good scores in Maths Olympiads will fetch you nothing.

Exactly! I agree that a vast majority of Indians haven't even heard of Maths Olympiads! But more than profits, I would describe it as a cultural thing for Indians.

Maths Olympiad doesn't seem to have caught Indians' fancy yet nor majority of them even know about it. Once it does, they will start doing well there too - just like any large pool of demography with enough focus and preparation.

If you want an example, take a look at Spelling Bee competitions in US. About a decade ago, a few Indian-Americans thought that it would be cool to compete in Spelling Bee competitions and they have virtually ruled the competitions ever since!

Although Spelling Bee and Maths Olympiad are entirely different categories of competitions, there is nothing about being an Indian that makes you particularly bad at Mathematics or any other subject - unless your assumptions reek of racial undertones!

.
Put a ten million dollar award (or make topping it a pre-requisite for entering engineering / med school) and see the Indians / Pakistanis top the olympiads...... we're inherently a lazy bunch, won't lift a finger if it didn't pay handsomely! :D

I do not doubt Iran is good at Maths, but judging from the history i don't think you should be expecting Iran to be amongst top 5 in the Olympiad. If you say all these years Iran didn't rank within top 5 because of underachieving then every country can say the same. You should be proud that Iran has performed so well this year. I understand your wish to see Iran to be in the top 5 annually, Iran will just have to work on that.

I would say Indians are relatively better at quantitative subjects such as maths than at soft subjects such as languages.

I am surprised about india's performance. They created zero and they have good writers for algebra. Now its looks like they have less interest in mathematics which is not good sign for future. They are feeling comfortable with imports.

We'll see need to wait and see what happens next time and whether Iran keeps up the work.

As far as Indian psyche is concerned (as much as I've come across in my short life)...

If in India or Middle East:

1. IIT
2. IIT
3. IIT
4. IIM
5. MIT
6. MIT
7. MIT
8. Some Med School

If in the US:

1. MIT
2. MIT
3. MIT
4. Johns Hopkins
5. Johns Hopkins
6. Johns Hopkins

General things on an Indians mind or most common topics of discussion:

1. Guines book of word records.
2. Cricket stats
3. Doctor
4. Engineer
5. Rocket this Missile that.... or anything or anyone to do with NASA, specially if he/she is an Indian working there......
6. Anything with the word 'Nuclear'
7. Zaat paat, which basically translates to Brahmin or not (no disrespect here, it's just what I've come across)
8. From North or South.
9. Meat eater or vegetarian
10. Published or not
11. Places visited locally or across the globe
12. Where to marry his/her daughter and if the groom is an Engineer / Doctor or NOT.
13. Bitching about how religion has become a commodity (no disrespect again)
14. PAKISTAN BASHING (Indian Muslims / Hindus all have this trait in common! :D)

Just my observations........

Whenever India scores so badly in certain events, Indians will say India does not care. Same with the Summer Olympics, they try hard to get gold in certain sports but when compared to China in the medal table. Indians will simply say they don't care about Olympics

.
To be fair, a country with India's huge population, I expected India to be much higher. Either Indians genuinely don't care much for these Olympiads or they have some serious work to do.

Many Indians here have bragged too much about their Maths, such as the invention of zero and a Math powerhouse in ancient times. But really if they do not care about these Olympiads because it does not give them benefits then how come the rest of the world care? And no, a huge population does not guarantee a top spot. East Asians have the highest IQ, that's why South Korea and Japan score much higher than India despite having a much lower population. The reason US often rank amongst the top 5 is because their team has East Asians.
