The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is presently going through massive upgradation and reformation to become a modern and effective spy agency, it is learnt.

After the ISI, that is said to have been overhauled and upgraded during the last decade or so to become one of the most well-equipped spy agencies in the world, the government is now in the process of improving the IB in a phenomenal way.

This upgradation of the IB will contribute to the overall capacity of the country’s security agencies to counter security challenges, including terrorism, haunting the nation.

Sources said the IB had already set up its modern tracking systems in Karachi, Sindh, the KP, Islamabad and Lahore and in a few months the same technology would be fully implemented in Quetta.

The sources claim that because of the ongoing up-gradation process, the IB has already started producing remarkable results in Karachi in areas of terrorism, kidnapping for ransom and extortions. It is said Rs2-3 has been spent on this technological up-gradation.

It is believed that in the next six to eight months, the set goal of technological up-gradation and reformation would be achieved.Regarding the human resource reforms, it is said different levels of the IB officials are being imparted modern skills to meet the modern day challenges.

Sources say following Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s direction, the incumbent IB chief Aftab Sultan launched the up-gradation and reformation process. Although during the second PPP tenure the IB was expanded almost three fold, not much attention was paid to its up-gradation.

The security agencies of this day and age require modern equipment to spy on terrorists, enemies of the state, criminal mafias and others. Being the lead intelligence agency of the county, the ISI has though been upgraded from time to time, the other agencies, including the IB, remained ignored.

It is believed that the government needs to focus on the reformation and up-gradation of all the security and intelligence agencies besides ensuring that they all work in cohesion to meet the challenges facing the nation and the country.

It is said that the exchange and sharing of intelligence reports between different spy and security agencies would help better counter the aggressive and evil designs of the internal and external enemies of Pakistan.

A few months back the PTI chief Imran Khan had alleged that the IB had distributed Rs2.7 billion among the media houses and journalists to sabotage their sit-in. In actuality, the said amount was spent on the agency’s up-gradation and reformation.

The IB chief had also offered to the media to share, in camera, all details of the agency’s spending with the Supreme Court. He categorically denied the allegations and said that he did not spend even a single penny on journalists and media houses. He said all the money alleged to have been given to the media persons, had actually been spent on counter-terrorism.
