INS Vishal: Best of Russia and United States

Guys,
Do we have confirmed reports from PIB or Navy that INS Vishal will indeed be nuclear powered. I dont want to believe these news reports blindly.

Nothing wrong in replying with in the rules of the forum....... The concept of a forum works on difference of opinion, and discussion..... But it is important that one follow the forum rules

Btw I did not find anything wrong in the post you quoted here, The guy made a simple observation which says, INS Viraat was something which was in paper tilll its launch...... Nothing wrong, I cant say the same about the other post you tagged....
Thanks for the reply.
A member call me dumb troll is nothing wrong ? if a person not agrees with one's opinion / observation, allowed to call dumb and troll ?

looks logical but IAC 1 class might not actually meet projected strategic policy of IN.
Plans to operate heavier fighters along with sea borne AWACS require flat deck and higher energy consumption makes it logical to go with N propulsion.
Now this will require significant re-design of IAC1 (assuming weight is kept more or less close to 40,000 T limit), which again will take time and vendor qualification and re-tooling.
& if we are thinking of having future indigenous AC in 65-70,000 T class, it is better to devote energy and time on Vishal class carrier and upgrade Cochin facilities.
IMHO that would be a much better investment in future.

I think the plan would be to have 3 ACC, one on arabian sea and another on bay of bengal, with 1 on standby/repair

the best we have heard is Navy Chief's comment that Nuclear propulsion is being considered.
However two things are of importance:
  1. EMALS is being considered among various DTTI policy and it is difficult to see India committing to such a energy hungry technology without having Nuclear power on board.
  2. Requirement of ship based surveillance planes E2D specifically along with possible F 35 sale talks doing rounds.
Seems like India has reached some kind of understanding with US on future AC building and it should not therefore come as a surprise if Northrop Grumman actually collaborates in INS Vishal and beyond.

Sir,
I read sometime back that there is a plan to have 5 CBGs by 2030, with Vikramaditya, Vikrant, Vishal and 2 more Vishal class ships. 4 on duty and one in refit.
India wishes to patrol area from Gulf of Aden to Malacca Strait and therefore having such a large fleet might be well justified, considering our trade and strategic interests.

.
Would it be powered by the same PWR as in future Indian SSN ?

Nope. The PWR was developed with both AC and Sub requirement. Only the miniaturization for latter and powering issues had to be circumvented. Also you will recall that the Navy had been denied a go ahead to think about Nuke powered Aircraft carriers under the UPA 2. However, with the present government assuring finance for the same, the same has been given the go ahead. The area for concern for us still remains the metallurgy

So far Government sanction in principle has been for 04 x CBGs. The imperative to Navy has been to control and prepare to defend Indian interests as also undertake military and humanitarian operations in Indian Ocean Littoral. With the increase in focus to South China Sea as also US' keenness to seek closer cooperation in Pacific rim too along with Japan and Australia in order to ensure open SLOCs, the government may still revise the authorization depending on additional requirements. Also point to remember is that if the present government is not re-elected, the situation may change and we may find instead of 4 even 2 CBGs are not there.

Its a big relief that its in DTTI. Else, after a failed attepmt for EMALS (sure it will come with lot of strings), we can throw nuke prop out of the window. However if EMALS are coming for sure, and as we know, nuke propulsion will be the way to go.

As master bargainers, we will need to see what US will be offred this time in return. And I have near zero hope for F-35 in IN colors.
