The navy’s sole aircraft carrier INS Viraat can continue its service for another three years, the Lok Sabha was on Monday informed.

In a written reply, Defence Minister AK Antony said adequate safeguards are in place to ensure that navy’s operational capabilities are not compromised during the time a ship is under refit and repairs.

He was asked whether the country does not have an aircraft carrier prowling the high seas.

“No. One aircraft carrier is currently in commission … (INS) Viraat can soldier on for another three years,” he said.

Antony also said that repairs and refits are planned activities and a normal feature in the life of a ship.

“Adequate safeguards are in place to ensure that the operational capabilities of the navy are not compromised during the time a ship is under refit. After completion of refit, the life of a ship gets extended depending on the nature of refit,” he said.

In reply to another question, he said a contract has been signed with the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for supply of 42 Su-30 MKI aircraft at a total cost of Rs 16,147.28 crore.

He also said the aircraft are planned to be delivered by 2016-17. Replying to a query on establishment of a strike corps, Antony denied that the government has shelved the proposal to raise and maintain such a corps. On proposals to export indigenously developed helicopters, Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh said, “Seven Advance Light Helicopters (ALH) Dhruv have already been supplied to the Ecuador.”

Singh added that orders have come for supply of three Chetak and equal number of Cheetal helicopters to Suriname and Afghanistan, respectively.

Replying to a question on list of defence equipment bought under Life Cycle Cost method, Antony said, “So far only one contract i.E. Supply of Basic Trainer Aircraft, has been concluded using the total cost of acquisition model under the LCC approach.”

So for some time we will have 2 carriers

INS Viraat will only be retired once IAC-1 is inducted around 2018.

So, when INS Viky will join, we will have 2 carriers all the time.

When IAC-2 will be inducted than we will have 3 carriers all the time.

.
its not the first time we've had two carriers operating . from 86- mid 90s we had 2 carriers , till the vikrant was retired.

Indian Navy need new AC. INS Viraat is so small, that Russian didnt even bother landing aircraft on it. They mainly used it for helicopters to be honest.

Viraat is for S/VTOL aircraft like Harriers, and presently it's functioning like a Helicopter carrier because of absence of Harriers onboard most of the time.

The Indian Navy has one carrier in trials, one in construction and another one is being designed right now.

When did the Russians want to land on it? Its an ex Royal Navy carrier and is used to operate helos and Harrier STVL fighters.

No. we are not going have 6 to 7 carriers in 2035. And no way we go for 7 carriers because IN's blue water navy plan itself contains 6 carriers only 2 in BoB and 2 for AbS and another 2 will be either in reserve or refitting or any other humaniatarian service. And this plan is for 2045 only.because we are going to start our third and fourth carrier after 2020 only and IAC 5 and 6 after 2030 only. in 2040 we will retire our viky carreier. so no way for 6 to 7 in 2035.

yes we need shipyard to construct and also it needs skilled man power too. we are having the first but heavily lacks in second.

There are some, but the number seems to be very low today. I also wouldn't really consider it as a 2nd aircraft carrier today, but as a helicopter carrier.
