An Indian Navy warship foiled a pirate attack on a Greek merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden when it launched a helicopter and marine commandoes forcing eight Somali pirates to abandon the plan.

Indian Naval Ship Godavari, on anti-piracy patrol escort operation since May 25 in the region responded to a distress call from MV Elinakos in the early hours of July 16 while escorting four other ships in the Gulf of Aden.

“The INS Godavari was quick to launch a helicopter to locate the skiff being used by the pirates and subsequently launched marine commandos to board the pirate boat. On being approached by the naval boat, they dumped their arms, ammunition and other piracy triggers’’, Indian Navy spokesman said.

A German naval ship, the Niedersachsen, also coordinated with INS Godavari in the operation, which continued with the escort mission, on completion of the operation.

Since it deployment in May this year, INS Godavari has safely escorted 219 ships of various countries and last week, the warship escorted a Pakistani ship, the MV Islamabad, with an all-Pakistani crew of 38.

The Indian Navy has been deploying ships since 2008 in the Gulf of Aden for escorting merchant vessels and Indian Naval ships have escorted 1,665 ships successfully.

Good to know, looking forward for more such news in future. To me India should put 5-6 warships their.

.
Just like to know, do the Indian Navy get paid to protect other ships or do India does it as free will?

Actually apart from publicity this is a stupid move by India , patrolling the straits when in reality no other country shows any real intent in it except in case of their own MVs.

Indian Navy also should concentrate exclusively on Indian flagged vessels and the Govt of India must demand a payment from the shipping cos in case of other country vessels.

Why should we keep serving free lunches ?

But our dumb sensationalist media thinks otherwise ie IN should save every MV which has Indian crew members. Remember MV SUEZ

I think its like a coalition of World Navies with an unwritten agreement that if you watch my MV, I will watch yours.

Anyways the World is investing a lot of time and energy in treating the patient (Piracy) than the disease (Anarchy in Somalia).

It is our backyard and whom do you want to protect it other than ourselves?

Nope.It is not. Especially with two US fleets stationed right over there and they not moving a finger why should we stretch our assets and waste tax money on that ?

Pursue the pirates with vengeance only in case OUR vessels are hijacked and help others in times of need but get a protection money from the shipping cos or their Govt.

It is India's interest to stop piracy emanating out of Africa as we have seen in recent news- pirates a moving closer and closer t Indian shores. This is worrying given how much India relys on international shipping for exports and imports. Now if these are threatened on a regular basisi this can have real and serious threats to India and her economy. It may cause inflation (already a very serious issue in India) if shipping firms have pay ransoms, higher insurance or private security firms for protection from these pirates. India has much to lose, GoI acknowledges this and is taking appropriate action.
