Business News
State-owned aerospace company PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) has introduced the new N219, an aircraft entirely designed by local engineers and suitable for travel around the archipelago.

International Civil Aviation Association (ICAO) special envoy Indroyono Soesilo said he was proud to present the work of local engineers and their contribution to the world of aviation technology.

“The 19-seat N219 is the final contribution of Indonesian aerospace engineers from PTDI's 1970s and 1980s generation. Its system integrity, navigation systems and all its technology are all original Indonesian made,” Indroyono said as quoted by Kompas.com.

He said that he hoped this would inspire a new generation of engineers in the nation and continue the process of knowledge transfer from experienced PTDI engineers to the new generation.

Former employees of PTDI who had moved on to work at leading aviation companies such as Boeing, Bombardier, Bell or ATR should pass on their experiences and skills to young aspiring engineers, Indroyono continued.

These former employees had spread across the globe creating a diaspora of Indonesian aviation technology specialists, he added.

“If it is not taught to the young, the ability of Indonesians to design airplanes will eventually cease," said Indroyono. (liz/dan)(+)

Our ambitious first attempt to introduce national aircraft (N250) had failed financially, when Indonesia hit by crysis and gone broke in 1998.

Today, we step prudently, by introducing smaller plane, N219, a much needed aircraft to reach and connect our 17.000 islands. It's success will pave the way for larger aircraft development, N245 & N270. Wish us luck.

Yup, but not a total failed project either, at least it did fly with 2 prototypes, so it proves our design skills, and it also bring confidence to our people even until now ....................... :smokin:

PT Air Born Plans to Order Eight N219 Aircraft

Zoom Out Zoom In Normal
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pioneer Airlines PT Air Born will order eight units of the N219 aircraft, which have been produced by the National Aviation and Space Agency (Lapan) and state-owned aircraft industry PTDI.

Air Born will purchase eight N219s to support its fleet, which flies pioneer routes and provides charter services. "We have ordered eight units of N219s. Perhaps this is the first order. We hope in 2017 that we will get to operate the planes, replacing those which are still active now," said President Director of PT Air Born, Sazahan Mohamad Yassin, during the rollout of the N219 at the PTDI Hanger in Bandung, West Java, on Thursday.

Sazahan said the order for the N219s is part of the companys strategy to seize opportunities in the charter aircraft business, which Air Born has been doing so far.

He said his company is operating six Twin Otter planes. Most of them are operated through a charter system. "Ahead, the aircraft charterer business is promising. We are focusing on providing services for mining and cargo transportation," he added.

The company has already secured financing guarantees for the purchase of the PTDI product, he said, adding that he believed N219s were of high quality.

"PTDI has proven its guarantee on the quality, convenience and security of its planes. They are needed for pioneer flights and charter services," he added.

He said his company's trust in PTDI products was built after observing its products, such as the CN235 and N212 aircraft that have been used by many countries. "N219 has excellent transportation capacity and we will use it to increase the number of aircraft in our cargo transportation fleet," noted Sazahan.

why a "muslim" country mate? why not a leading country period? please dont consider it islamophobic - just trying to reduce the "us" and "them" divide here. absolutely no need to introduce a religious divide in here!

On topic - small steps in the right direction. Is China helping in any form? just curious - and surely this research will help in military as well as civilian domain.

Congratulations!

Also, does Indonesia make the engines by itself?

Nope, engine still imported but 60 percent of the component is Indonesian made. We dont use technical assistant for this project, so we make it without any foreigner designers help.

Thanks, for the N219's engines we use Pratt & Whitney PT6A-42 from Canada. We do have engines factory, Honeywell Indonesia, in Bintan that supply TPE 331 engine for our CN-235 and NC-212.

For N219 airplane, we use our own resources, 100% Indonesian design from a clean sheet. No foreign assistance.

N219 will be plotted to replace our remaining Nomad fleet. Thailand already voice their interest to acquire this plane.
