Great news for Indonesian MotoGP fans — in 2 years, they won’t have to fly somewhere like France, Japan or Malaysia to watch a race up close and in person.

The president director of the Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), Abdulbar M. Mansoer, said they have signed a contract with Dorna Sports — the exclusive commercial and television rights holder for MotoGP — in Madrid on 29 January 2019 to host a race in 2021.

“We signed a contract with Dorna in January. Brazil was the other contender, but we ended up winning the race. We’ll prepare the venue by building a circuit,” Abdulbar said yesterday, as quoted by Bola.

The race venue will be the Mandalika Circuit, a street circuit soon to be built in the West Nusa Tenggara capital of Lombok.

According to local media the contract has 3 years duration with an option for extension.

As reported by Motorsport in November of last year, the race venue development contract has been awarded to a French construction company, Vinci Construction. The company has been allotted 131 hectares of land surrounding Mandalika, a business area located in south of Lombok.

Abdulbar said ITDC has also secured funding from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).‎ He’s optimistic that the construction of the 4.3-kilometer street circuit, which will start in October this year, will be concluded just in time before the race.

The street circuit is predicted to bring a large number of tourists to Indonesia, especially Lombok. One race, or grand prix, takes about four days from the qualification stage to the final race. ITDC estimates there could be around 100,000 spectators attending the race each day.

“One race needs around four days, because there’s the qualification stage and Moto2 as well. If there were 100,000 spectators each day, and 150,000 on the last day of the race, we could get approximately 300,000 visitors [to Mandalika],” Abdulbar said.

Which one is more well known Moto Gp or F1?

Which one is more well known Moto Gp or F1?

Equally well known, but In Indonesia? I think Moto-GP take the lead. My cousins for example are crazy about it. LOL

F1 has lost the appeal in recent years. Most people here don't talk about it as much as Moto-GP. Plus, almost every year one or two Moto-GP top racers visiting Indonesia. Thanks to Japanese motor companies who sponsoring them. Not to mention we have a local brand of helmet (KYT) being used by racers in the prime race for years now.

I think Moto-GP will find Indonesia a new home. Lots of fans and supporters here. Indonesians will surely flock into Mandalika when it happen - Moto-GP fans or not - .. I bet on it.

Moto GP has more fans in Indonesia compare to F1. I personally a fan of F1 back in the late 90's, however after 00'ish F1 literally shooting themselves in the foot with all kind of stupid regulations that has nothing to do with the race or car safety.

BTW does anyone has the layout map of Mandalika race circuit or any familiarity with the circuit itself?

Yes, MotoGP is more popular in Indonesia

We usually have "Watching Together" event in bar and cafe.

F1 has more money & glamour, but for excitement, nothing beats MotoGP.

One of two new events expected to join the schedule in 2021 – together with Brazil – the Mandalika Circuit was first announced back in February and work has been underway since to develop the venue, with ground being broken in August.

The event will be held on the island of Lombok, a popular tourist destination located just a short flight from Bali.

Now organisers have released a video to give an idea of the layout, architecture and the geography of the track, which will be held right on the coastline of the island.

Indonesia MotoGP set to become biggest event on calendar

With an expected capacity of 150,000 spectators, many anticipate the Indonesia MotoGP event to become the most popular on the calendar, surpassing Thailand which welcomed more than 220,000 spectators over the course of a race weekend.

Though it hasn’t held a MotoGP event since 1997, Indonesia is a huge market for both the sport and the motorcycle industry, with Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki selling vast numbers of bikes there.

The sport has made repeated attempts to return to Indonesia over the decades but has fallen foul of numerous issues, including finding a venue that was up to the standard necessary to meet FIM Grade A specifications.

As well as MotoGP, the Mandalika Circuit is set to be included on the 2021 WorldSBK schedule too.
