Indonesia has expressed interest in developing railway infrastructure in Bangladesh by joining a tender for the export of 1,050 train cars to the South Asian country.

State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Minister Erick Thohir welcomed Bangladeshi Railways Minister Md. Nurul Islam Sujon in Jakarta on Thursday to discuss opportunities for Indonesia to join the railway project.

The president directors of state-owned firms likely to be involved in such a project also attended the meeting. They represented electronic equipment maker PT Len Industri, train manufacturer PT Industri Kereta Api (Inka) and railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI).

"We are not only seeking a business-to-business partnership but also want to help train [workers from Bangladesh] to support our partnership," Erick told reporters after the meeting in Jakarta.

The move marks yet another effort to push local trainmakers onto the global market. Last year, Inka sent 15 train cars to Bangladesh, part of 250 to be shipped in total, after the company exported 200 train cars to the country in 2006 and 2016.

"Certainly, this is part of our efforts to develop train industries not only inside the country but also to supply other countries, like Bangladesh," Erick said.

Erick estimated that the railways partnership with Bangladesh had generated US$181.6 million in revenue since 2005. The Bangladeshi minister said Bangladesh and Indonesia were "good friends" and highlighted the fact that both countries had large Muslim populations.

The Philippine state railway operator is using two trains made by Inka to serve customers in Makati city, the financial hub of metropolitan Manila. Inca is also set to deliver 30 electrodiesel locomotives worth $91.3 million to Zambia based on a contract signed in January 2018.

The state-owned train manufacturer said last year it was expecting to sign Rp 7.2 trillion ($506 million) worth of order contracts in 2019, including for exports of rolling stock to African and Asian countries.

Yup, this is a very large contract and showing Bangladesh government ambitious effort to improve rail way system in the country.

Currently PT Inka factory is busy completing the order from Bangladesh rail way and Indonesian rail way company. Indonesian rail way at least need 900 train cars and currently PT Inka is working to complete first contract for about 450 train cars. The company is also supplying trains for Greater Jakarta LRT project at the moment. So they are quite busy at least for the next 3-4 years to meet the current orders.

That huge order IMO will be supplied by second factory which is currently under construction if PT Inka can win the tender. The tender competition will likely exist between Indonesian, Indian, and Chinese companies. Second factory is expected to complete this year although the construction has just been started in the end of 2019. Second factory will have 4 times larger capacity and located near the port.

I think Muslim nation should prefer other Muslim product and services and it is very nice to see Bangladeshi Minister himself who come to Indonesia to ask Indonesian participation on the tender. It shows a good gesture and inshaAllah the action will be rewarded by Allah Himself. It is showing Brotherhood feeling among Muslim nations are not just an empty slogan.

Thank You bro, and surely Indonesian will try to thanks Bangladesh for its preference on Indonesia train products. The fact that Bangladesh has ordered around 450 train cars from Indonesia since 2005 is very appreciated by our side and our SOE minister has also mentioned it.

Our SOE Minister has said he wants more colaboration between Indonesian SOE with Bangladesh. I think Bangladeshi products can have more market access if they have close relation with Indonesian SOE. I heard Bangladesh have good pharmaceutical companies so it can cooperate with Kimia Farma, Indonesian state owned pharmaceutical companies that operate as both producer and retailer. Kimia Farma is by far the biggest pharmaceutical retailer in Indonesia and there is also Biofarma another state owned pharmaceutical companies.

Another possible collaboration is in aerospace sector where Bangladesh has a dream to build its own aerospace company and Indonesia IMO can help the effort.

We need to help each other as Muslim nations and the effort to do that can be better done if we have cooperation between our large companies. Indonesian SOE's itself are very large and contribute significantly in Indonesian economy, so it show huge opportunity for both sides.

SOE Minister Erick Thohir said that Indonesia and Bangladesh have good bilateral relations in political, economic and trade terms. Erick said cooperation in several sectors was proof that Indonesia paid serious attention to Bangladesh.

Erick said, the value of cooperation between the two countries increased from the original 1.45
billion US dollars in 2014 to 1.97 billion US dollars in 2018.

"I want to ensure relations between the two countries continue to be well established. Thank you, you have been working with our BUMN since 2006 to supply train cars or locomotives in Bangladesh, we look forward to the support that can be given to develop the economy in Bangladesh, "Erick said while receiving a visit by Bangladeshi Minister of Railways Nurul Islam Sujan at the SOE Ministry Office, Jakarta, Friday (2/28).

Erick explained that from 2005 until now, there were five contractual agreements that had been agreed between the Bangladesh Railway and Inka. Of the cooperation agreement, as many as 450 railroad cars produced by Inka have operated in Bangladesh. The cooperation between the two continues to this day. Inka is known to be participating in a tender of 1,050 cars with a value of hundreds of millions of US dollars.

"This is part of the development of our railroad industry which is not only focused on the country but also other countries, such as Bangladesh," Erick continued.

Erick added, besides cooperation with Inka, there were other opportunities for cooperation such as the construction of the Power Plan and LNG through PT Pertamina (Persero) Tbk, and PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero).

"To develop the economy, electricity is of course very important so this opportunity for cooperation is something we must discuss in the future," Erick said.

Erick also took the opportunity to offer cooperation in terms of Human Resource Development through training workers in Bangladesh as well as hospital management to address health issues in the country.

"I hope in the future we can establish cooperation with Bangladesh in other sectors," Erick said.

Bangladesh Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan also expressed his interest in discussing and exploring the possibility of cooperation in terms of railroad transportation for the common welfare of the two countries.

Yes BD is very good at pharma and is starting it's export growth now. BD and Indonesia should collaborate here.

BD can learn a lot from Indonesia in the aerospace sector and maybe the two countries can work on products jointly down the line one day.

Another thing is that meat consumption is exploding in BD and there is not enough land to rear the required animals. This is a good export market into BD.

I whole heartedly agree. If we can help each others, we will be less dependant on other non Muslim countries. This process will benefit Muslims and will make our industries grow bigger. In the end it will help other Muslim nations. We are nation of 1.8 billions. We can be bigger again if we help and value each others.

That is very true. And it will make as a true believer as well since real believer according to Hadith is the one who wants what is best for their brother.

We are actually living in a fascination time where all Muslim nations have been liberated except Palestine and we are also growing both militarily and economically. 10 years from now many Muslim nations are projected to double their economy like in Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey, Egypt etc and even particularly for Bangladesh it is projected to almost triple their economy at that time. That huge economies then will have large spending capacity and it will become our economic power.

As we can see now that European countries are preferring to have trade with each other. One example to show their unity is their action to bring Indonesia to WTO for our decision in banning nickle ore export. That action is taken in order to help only two small European countries who rely on our ore nickle supply. They also collectively ban biodiesel that come from palm oil to help some European countries who produce sun flower edible oil.

So far our unity in economic term is still non exist except for several transaction like Bangladesh order on Indonesian train. Beside that, Muslim brands on finished products are also still relatively much smaller in capturing international market then brands from Non Muslim countries, so our customers get difficulty to get alternative from Muslim brands.

I think there should be some kind of meeting in OIC to discuss this issue and push every member morally to prefer other Muslim product and services when making any transaction using state budget.

So, how many centuries it will take Bangladesh to manufacture trains and engines? It is a shame it imports everything and keeps the private companies away from taking initiatives that can produce things.

On the other hand, its govt people keep on parroting the dream of the 4th Industrial revolution when this country has failed to achieve even the 1st industrial revolution. Very sad situation.

Yet, some people believe that BD per capita GDP will rise to $12,000. I ask where are the ingredients? Train car manufacturing could have been one.

I think we need to take Arabs such as Egypt out of this "Muslim bloc" at the start.
They are too beholden to the Gulf Arabs whose interests will not be aligned to Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, BD, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Once the "Muslim Bloc" has been set up and functioning for 10 years(say by 2040) then it will become quite a powerful block economically, militarily and technologically and slowly the Arab countries can be taken in one by one.

Muslim countries need two things in order to be able to successfully form a bloc - one is natural resources and the other is technology.

If we dont include Arab nations, the block will be less effective. Any way, BD economy is projected to reach 700 billion dollar in 2030 so it has already hold significant position on the block. No need to worry that Arab will be dominant on the block. One of the main reasons of the block to be formed is to make economic scale for Muslim products so that they can compete with Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Western ones. More members are better since the collective market will be bigger. It also needed to develop the brotherhood feeling among Muslim nations, just like happening in Europe when they develop EU, and to force Muslim leaders to stick together.

But I am also agree on you that bringing Egypt to the club will create problem, particularly Egypt under Military regime. As I said in previous thread, the Muslim block will be started by democratic Muslim nations under Islamist government first.

Consumption on personal level cannot be controlled by the state but continuous campaign by clerics, Islamic institution in every Muslim nation IMO will help boosting Muslim products sales. On the other hand, on the state level there should be a joint commitment to make Muslim products and services as preferred one. So procurement for defense products for instant will prefer Muslim nation defense companies rather then defense companies from countries outside of the block. It is just like how Western European companies mostly buy armament from either US and other EU members, even some of them impose defense embargo to China.

Talking about Turkey, I think they can make turbojet for aircraft starting at 2035.

Making a joint military force then can be pursued after economic block has run smoothly for several years, so that military intervention can be conducted if necessary to prevent another Syria and Libya to happen in the future. If we have the force now for example, we can force Libyan factions to make a peace deal and set up election. Any faction that reject the peace agreement will be fought by the joint force.

We don't have to import everything, but we also can't make everything in our country as no country in this world is self sufficient in every areas. Better we should focus specially on ICT and also later maybe on military industries because we have possibilities in such sectors. Also we can improve our country made motorcycles too! We are already self sufficient in pharmaceutical sector.

We can import some other necessary things from other countries like Indonesia and turkey or others.

What do you mean by first industrial revolution and why do we need to achieve it in order to be a part of fourth industrial revolution? Do you want Bangladesh making steam locomotive in order to achieve the first industrial revolution? Please elaborate!

Sorry Buddy - it is not WHAT is being sold, rather WHO is selling it.

We will not be a party to support a regime that is intent on discriminating and persecuting a populace (Muslims) for no fault of their own.

A country like India that cannot live up to global standards of non-discrimination, equal opportunity, diversity and inclusive practices has no chance to compete for business of other civilized nations.

India won't get the contract - period.
