Akamai: Indonesia Top Source of Internet Attacks; DDoS Reports Jump

Malicious hackers have a new favorite country.

Indonesia was the source of the most Internet attack traffic in the second quarter of 2013, pushing China out of the top spot in the quarterly “State of the Internet” report from Akamai (NASDAQ: AKAM).

The Cambridge, MA-based company, which handles about a third of global Internet traffic, tracked attacks from IP addresses in 175 different countries or regions during the quarter. It found that attacks starting at IP addresses in Indonesia almost doubled from the first quarter of the year, growing to 38 percent of all global attack traffic.

That doesn’t mean a ton of hackers just up and moved to Indonesia. Akamai’s study tracks the source IP address used by an attacker, and those people can start their work by hijacking an address .

“For example, a criminal in Russia may be launching attacks from compromised systems in China,” Akamai notes.

What the report does show is that, along with a growing rate of broadband adoption and Internet connection speed, Indonesia is seeing its vulnerability to exploits increase.

China represented 33 percent of all global attack traffic in the second-quarter study. It drops off dramatically after that, with the U.S. ranking third with slightly less than 7 percent of attacker IP addresses.

Akamai also said it saw a dramatic increase in the number of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks, in which attackers swarm their targets with a wide network of coordinated connections that drain resources, knocking a website offline.

Reports of DDoS attacks on Akamai customers jumped 54 percent from the first quarter to the second, which the company said could well be correlated with political unrest around the globe, including the ongoing civil war in Syria. As you might expect, most of those attacks were reported against enterprise or commerce targets in the Americas.

If this recent quarterly increase in DDoS attacks becomes more than a temporary blip, it could be a bad sign for the Internet as a whole, Akamai said.

“There is a very real possibility this trend will continue, and perhaps even accelerate, as the current geopolitical environment heats up,” the report notes. “If we continue to see a 50 percent quarter-over-quarter increase in DDoS attacks in coming quarters, the impact on the Internet as a whole will become a much bigger concern than it is now.”

Indonesia Passes China to Become Top Source of Cyber-Attack Traffic

The unexpected surge in cyber-attacks coming from Indonesia earlier this year wasn’t a fluke.

The country has overtaken China to become the No. 1 source of attack traffic in the world, according to a report by Akamai Technologies to be published today.

Indonesia accounted for 38 percent of hacking-related traffic on servers Akamai monitored in the second quarter, up from 21 percent at the beginning of the year. China, a notorious haven for hacking, fell to No. 2, with a third of global attack traffic. The US share fell to 6.9 percent, but the country remained in third place.

Determining exactly where a cyber-attack operation is centralized is difficult because a hacker can take over victims’ machines located in another country. However, the sudden rise of Indonesia, which accounted for less than 1 percent before this year, is unusual.

Akamai found that the speed of the average Internet connection in Indonesia increased 125 percent in the second quarter compared with the same period in 2012. As broadband takes hold in this developing market, cyber-crime could run rampant.

The Indonesian government has recognized the problem. Tifatul Sembiring, the country’s minister of communication and information technology, talked last month about prioritizing cybersecurity nationally. His office hosted the Indonesia Information Security Forum last week to discuss the topic.

Don’t be surprised if the subject also comes up next week when the United Nations holds its Internet Governance Forum in Bali, Indonesia.

A very impressive "internet facts"... after all the fun that being accomplished by Ed Snowden :bounce:

It sounds like a solemn gesture by the Great Empire to urge Indonesia to officially adopt the NSA supervision... a benevolent act solely for the own sake of Indonesia for security concerns, in order to curb the alleged cyber attacking activities.

The fact that the US of A is just placed on the 3rd spot is really an act of humility, a much understated reality I do believe. It indicates how credible such news is.

It also means all the NSA massive cyber activities are excluded from any public record... hhmmm, after all the dimmed lights shed by Snowden :raise: ~~ <ALOL>

Good thing is, it proves that the internet penetration in Indonesia is high and the number of people with access to internet is increasing fast. It is followed by the increasing speed and coverage of internet provided by more and more providers.
