An Indo-French joint military training exercise named Exercise Shakti-2016 is all set to be held in Mahajan Field Firing Range in Bikaner in January. A contingent of French Army personnel will arrive at Bikaner in a few days to participate in the exercise.

Units involved are 35 Infantry Regiment of France, which is one of their oldest regiments and 2 Garhwal of Indian Army, which is a highly decorated unit and has proved its mettle in various wars.

France and India have a friendship of unmatched mutual trust and goodwill.France has been a pillar of strength for India's development, security and international relations. India too has always stood with France through its challenges. Exercise Shakti-2016 reflects the vibrancy of the continued Indo-France strategic partnership.First exercise of the series was held in 2011 in Chaubatia and second was held in France in 2013.

Defence spokesperson Lt Col Manish Ojha, said, "Exercise Shakti-2016 is the third edition in the series of bilateral exercises under this ban ner. The joint exercise would focus on counter terrorism operations in the backdrop of semi-urban terrain under United Nation mandate. To achieve interoperability in joint real life operations in the future, troops from French (I) Motorised Brigade and Indian Army's Infantry Unit would strive to acquaint themselves with the arms and equipment, command and control system and operational tactics of each other. The joint training would also focus on high degree of physical fitness, tactical drills, techniques and procedure. A comprehensive training programme for a period of two weeks has been worked out for achieving the same. During the exercise, participants will engage in a variety of missions from joint planning, cordon and search operations, search and rescue, joint tactical drills and basics of special arms skills."

He said, "The exercise would be conducted at Mahajan Field Firing Range and on completion of the same, the personnel of the two armies would strive to gain experience and learning from each other on terrorist solu ions. The exercise would be conducted in two phases, namely combat conducting, actical training and valida ion exercise."

The size and scope of this combined exercise is unparalleled and will be characterized by regular, realistic, academic and natural exchange which would form a part of Shakti-2016. The broadened and unprecedented scope of the exercise stands as a testament to the wellknit people to people and mi itary to military ties between France and India.

very good. As much as we do such type of exercise, better prepared our armed forces will be. Today we show how we foiled the Attack on pathan kot. Where in other countries, they simply walk into protected area and makes the damage.

@Vauban; Good to see Joint Exercises between IA and the French Armee. They are relatively rare. Both Armies can train together in Jungle Warfare and COIN as well; since the IA has now built up substantial experience and expertise in these areas, while it is likely that the French Armee has now less hours under its belt since leaving Indo-China. In turn, the IA can work with the French in Alpine Warfare; though it has had early introduction of such skills from the German Army, and now has its own experience over the years in Siachen. sharing of ideas is always constructive.

Some thing from the past exercise

The first unit of the French Army to participate in an Indo-French joint exercise, a company of the 13th Mountain Infantry Battalion (MIB) marched in Chaubattia, Uttaranchal, in North India, with an Indian company, the Second Battalion of the Bihar Regiment.

The main aim of this manoeuvre was to enable the two units to share their combat experience. From firing to commando techniques, via paragliding, each unit discovered the methods and skills of the other.

Theoretical presentations and dynamic demonstrations also enabled the soldiers of both countries to compare their counter-terrorism operation techniques: the French Army’s “cordon and search”, and Indian Army’s “search and destroy”. Both the 13th MIB and the 2nd Bihar being experienced in this field, the exchanges were particularly constructive.

During the final exercise, a French section was incorporated in an Indian company, and vice versa. It was a dream opportunity for the MIB to work on their English, explore Indian culture, and, above all, weave special ties with their Indian counterparts.

This exercise was jointly conducted by Brigadier General Hervé Wattecamps, commander of the 27th Mountain Infantry Battalion, and Major General Rakesh Arya, General Officer Commanding, 6th Mountain Division.

It is a win-win situation as we could gain experience from the Indians and them could gain experience from us.
And strengthen the cooperation between our forces.
-
Indian army has the chance to train with the 35e RI that is one of the oldest regiment of our army (created in 1604 !) and built a strong experience in the recent years since deployed in many overseas operations.

It's usually the Russians who come to the deserts of Rajasthan to take part in counter terrorism exercises. I think this is the first time French military will be coming to the thar desert. The previous locations for "Shakti" were Uttrakhand and French Alps.

Btw I have spent 3 good years of my life in Bikaner. I love the city. :)

Wow!!

2 gharwal regiment, in my knowledge, is atleast a century old.

35th Infantry Regiment

(35e régiment d'infanterie) is an infantry regiment of the French Army. Its origins date back to the formation of the régiment de Nemond in 1604 by a member of the gentry from Lorraine whose surname was Némond. During World War I it was nicknamed As de Trèfle (Ace of Clubs). It is now based at the garrison in Belfort.

Notable figures who have served with the regiment or its predecessors include the brothers Louis and Auguste de Keralio (from 1734 to 1749), Étienne-Charles de Damas-Crux (second in command of the régiment d'Aquitaine on 3 October 1779), Maurice Chevalier (in 1913) and Jean Chrétien Fischer.

2nd Battalion (Victoria Cross Paltan or Superb Seconds)

The Garhwal Rifles is an infantry regiment of the Indian Army. It was originally raised in 1887 as the 39th (Garhwal) Regiment of the Bengal Army, it became part of the British Indian Army, and after the Independence of India, the Indian Army.

It served during the Frontier campaigns of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, as well in both the World Wars and the wars fought after Independence. Mainly made up of Garhwali soldiers, this regiment has a distinguished record and a unique identity. Today it is made up of more than 25,000 soldiers, organised into nineteen regular battalions (i.e. 2nd to 19th), the Garhwal Scouts who are stationed permanently at Joshimath and two battalions of the Territorial Army including 121 Inf Bn TA and 127 Inf Bn TA (Eco).
The Regiment has to its credit 03 Victoria Cross, 01 AC, 04 MVCs, 14 KCs, 52 VrC, 46 SC, 10 PVSM, 01 UYSM, 08 YSM, 284 SM (incl 06 Bar), 17 AVSM (including 01 Bar) and 40 VSM (including 01 Bar).

It will be great when the two exercises together and contribute to each others experience and knowledge.

. . . . .

I see them now.. Previously could not...

Wow this looks good...

Any pic showing house search or wall to wall engagements.. You know typical search missions in urban combat..

It will be a good solid learning for both sides...
