A joint Indo-US military exercise, involving the mechanized divisions will start from next month onwards in Bikaner District, Rajasthan.
The joint exercise, which is termed Yudh Abhyas, follows several other programs, in which both the Indian Army and the US Army participated jointly, as a part of the deal to improve the bilateral cooperation in the defence field. The peacekeeping operations undertaken by the United Nations are also kept in mind as the two armies analyze their tactics and abilities during the drill which starts in the first week of March.
From the American side, the 25th Infantry division (Light infantry-Airborne-Striker-Aviation), based in Wahiawa will participate and from the Indian side, the newly created South Western Command of the Army, which is based in Jaipur will be taking part. The two armies will train together and conduct manoeuvres, especially those related to securing lines of communication, extrication / rescue operations and intelligence requirements for sustained peace enforcement.
From the 25th Infantry, more than 200 soldiers will take part in this military drill, along with APCs, Tanks and other heavy equipment. From the South Western Command, a similar number are expected to attend, along with the Russian designed Boyevaya Mashina Pekhoty (BMP) Infantry Combat Vehicles, and Arjun and T-90/72/55 MBTs.
After the completion of the Yudh Abhyas drills, another military exercise will be held in California in April. Termed Shatrujeet, in this exercise soldiers from the American Armed Forces will be joined by more than 130 Indian soldiers from the infantry division. Later in August, 60 soldiers from the American Special Forces will hold a joint high-altitude military training exercise together with the Para Commandos of India.
