Berlin is the most student friendly city in Europe..things are pretty cheap and people are very welcoming to international students. I had quite a lot of fun and made friends with many Tobiases and Frauline Stefanis & Kristinas during a single semester

Georg, my daughter went on two week exchange programme to Humboldt University and she had fantastic time. The Germans were incredible. Most friendly people she has ever met and they were so intrigued and interested in her ethnic origin - Pakistan. The German-Turks were fantastic also. She did not like German food but apparently there were lot of Turkish restaurents. The place was safe and clean. She said that it is impossible to believe that these very people only 80 years ago did what they did. I have actually changed my opinion of Germans and even bought a German footbal strip to compliment my Argentian strip.

Exactly. Thats why I wrote both humane and patriotic. AfD and the likes thrive on the perceived abandonment of patriotic tendencies by the majority in their respective countries.

I had a German classmate and we used to play tennis together after the classes but one day I narrated her a mildly racist joke (sardar jee wala ) just in the flow of discussion and she really lectured for me 45 minutues against racism and narcissism ... lo kar lo baat.. then I realised how anti-racist they are but there are still racist people in Germany especially the eastern part.

Germans are pretty patriotic people but they have grown anti-racism since WW-II due to certain reasons. I had a German classmate and we used to play tennis together after the classes but one day I narrated her a mildly racist joke (sardar jee wala ) just in the flow of discussion and she really lectured for me 45 minutues against racism and narcissism ... lo kar lo baat.. then I realised how anti-racist they are but there are still racist people in Germany especially the eastern part.

I agree. However, I have noted in all my years in Germany that the youth (atleast the one with whom I interacted: fellow PhD students, company colleagues) some how feel apologetic when ever they talk about love for their own country. Yes, Germany has a dark chapter in its history, however that era has long passed and now Germany is a very different country. Its one thing to learn from the past and not to repeat the mistakes but it a totally another when many of the young people end up developing a healthy disdain for their own military (Bundeswehr).

I am trying to measure things on equal scales. If being a Pakistani, I never shy in front of anybody to express my patriotism (and defend Pakistan albeit knowing fully that we have got a good shares of stupidities), why I should expect any differently from my German friends.

All the developed countries are liberal and all the racist shitholes are undeveloped piss-poor countries with huge populations and depending on aid from the developed countries.

There is a difference in practical and expressive or verbal patriotism we can call it patriotism-verbatim. Germans and most of the developed nations are practising patriotic ..for example, they work hard, follow rules, pay taxes and rarely leave their country permanently. While in subcontinent, we emotionally claim our patriotism and rather try to undermine others to show how patriotic we are...but still we don't practice it. We don't follow the rules, we don't pay taxes, and leave the country if get the opportunity. So Germans are patriotic..it is just they don't wear it up on their sleeves.
