Indigenous manufacture of missiles in ‘one or two years’: Manohar Parrikar

“…we have already managed to almost indigenise 95 per cent of technology and I am very sure that in next one or two years, we should not have anything left in missile technology to be imported. We will be in a position to manufacture everything,” the Defence Minister added. (PTI)

India is just “one or two years” away from indigenously manufacturing missiles, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Saturday, claiming that DRDO scientists were on the verge of evolving seeker technology, which is critical to developing missile systems.

“We are at a very advanced stage of breaking into the technology of seeker, which is one of the crucial technology for any missile system and this is one system which India has not been able to penetrate so far,” he said in his address at the inauguration of a new Indian Institute of Technology in Goa.

“…we have already managed to almost indigenise 95 per cent of technology and I am very sure that in next one or two years, we should not have anything left in missile technology to be imported. We will be in a position to manufacture everything,” the Defence Minister added.

Present Seekers by DRDO

Imaging Infra-Red Seeker
High resolution seekers based on 320 × 256 long wave infra-red Focal Plane Array (FPA) and 384×288 medium wave infra-red FPA have been realised. Integration of 128×128 LWIR FPA-based seekers into PDV missiles for Air Defence Application is in final stages. Captive flight trials have been conducted for establising the terminal guidance of long-range missiles against fixed targets. Development of 640 × 512 MWIR FPA-based seeker and a miniature seeker has been initiated

RF Seeker
MMW Seeker
: Configuration for LOAL operation has been completed and proven in HILS. Interfaces with OBC, INS and Telemetry were successfully established. Flight trial of PGM seeker range and angle tracking was established in MI-8 helicopter. Seeker is under productionisation for ATL

ARSEEK: DSP-based active radar seeker was fully integrated and evaluated successfully.

High Dynamic Range Altimeter: Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) Radio Altimeter was successfully test flown in helicopter trials

Project Astra: AGAT seeker was integrated with missile and flight tested in December 2012. Two seekers were tested successfully with AIR targets. Indigenous development of Ku band seeker to replace non-ToT modules of AGAT seeker is under progress. ToT from M/s AGAT, Russia to M/s BEL have been initiated for realisation of Ku-band seeker.

Anti-ship Seeker: Design and development of anti-ship seeker is under progress.

AESA Seeker: TR module class MEMS Phase Shifter integration is under progress

no offence but do India not claim that most of their missiles are "indigenious" like brahmos and Akash etc

  • India is 1 or 2 yrs away from developing 'Seeker Tech' to indigenously manufacturing Missiles

Yes you are correct but critical seeker tech is not ours so we are trying to develop that also. Once done than our indigenous content will be in high 90s%. Thats the aim bcz developing X and Ku Band seeker is not so easy.

you mean guidance system ?
or just seekers like radar seekers and infrared seekers ?

Only seekers.. Gudiance system we have developed a lot.

Look at post #2
Astra AAM has AGAT Ku seeker which we want to replace by our own inhouse developed Ku band Seeker
Brahmos has Russian X Band Seeker whichw e want to replace by our X Band Seeker (developed a part by Astra Microwave)

Regarding IIR seeker(640x 512 pixel arrays) already developed. It wasas reported last month for Helina missile which is to be tested in Sept 2016 :
//
DRDO officials said that this third generation 'Fire and forget' missile, though lagging behind its schedule, has already been tested for its seven kilometer range but with IIR seekers with 128 x 128 focal plane array but added that the same was not sufficient for the users, the Army Aviation Corps. It is one of the five missile systems developed by DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).

"And now we are going to test a higher version seeker, with a much higher focal plane array (640x512 pixel arrays) as compared to the original plan. In fact, the captive trials have been successfully held in Bangalore recently," said the official.

I am honored here to say that I study under a prof who works on IR seekers and sensors for the defense establishment.

No country in today's day and age manufactures everything on its own. Some components here and there are always imported. What must of course be strived towards is that all the core and sensitive technologies are indigenized.
