India’s alliance with Japan, Germany and Brazil to press for a permanent seat in the expanded UN Security Council is “a biggest mistake”, an article in the state-run Chinese daily said today.

“This year marks the 70th anniversary of the UN, and appeals for UN Security Council (UNSC) reform are becoming increasingly louder,” Liu Zongyi, research fellow at the state-run Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, wrote in an article published in the Global Times. The G4 nations namely Brazil, India, Germany and Japan, are the most active in calling for a change, it said.

Since the UN General Assembly on September 14 adopted a negotiating text, setting the stage for talks on the reform, “some Indian media acclaimed that the nation’s bid for permanent UNSC seat has been boosted. However, in reality, it will take a long time to discuss only the wording of this document,” the article said.

Despite the Indian media’s warm responses to the move, Japan, rather than India, has played the most active role in seeking a permanent seat within the G4 bloc, it said.

“Indian politicians, academics and media insist China as its biggest obstacle in winning the seat. Beijing as a UNSC permanent member has not openly supported New Delhi’s UN aspiration. India, taking this as an excuse, pressures China through every possible means,” it said.

“In fact, India’s biggest mistake is to ally itself with Japan, Germany and Brazil. First of all, these three countries have opponents in the region. Japan’s bid for permanent membership will definitely invite strong opposition from China and South Korea,” it said.

China has been maintaining for long that it is a mistake on the part of India to join Japanspecially, whose candidature Beijing opposes for historical reasons.

China has not gone beyond saying that Beijing understands New Delhi’s aspiration to play a bigger role in the UN.

The article did not mention China’s close ally Pakistan’s opposition to India’s candidature for a permanent UNSC seat.

“Admittedly, the US once endorsed India’s aspirations before. The reason behind such support is to rope India in to counter China. But Washington will not support New Delhi to obtain a veto seat. India has observed that, in the IGN, the US refused to contribute to the negotiating text. This is surprising to the Indians,” it said.

“Uncertain of winning a permanent seat this year, Japan has already prepared to become a non-permanent Security Council member from 2016 to 2017. Earlier, Japan offered massive aid to Bangladesh in exchange for its support and has already won support from African and Latin American countries,” it said.

“India, on the other hand, has no such plan and already lagged behind Japan in winning the non-permanent seat, for which Asia has a quota of only one each year,” it said.

India has no problems with Chinese opinions, chinese can proceed with their agenda of blocking the reforms !

If China thinks that they will create a doubt in India's mind and break the alliance India and Japan has for UNSC then they are wrong. It is just a tactic by China to break the G4 block who are pushing together for UNSC reforms.

That's the best move to mounting diplomatic pressure on UN for early reform . But bad for Russia and China

I have been saying India has the best case for permanent seat among the G 4 and it should have gone alone. Also veto is amust for India atleast.

and china certainly will block it. when it comes down to a vote, there is no chance in hell that china will agree to any reforms that see japan gain a permanent seat. without chinese support, or at least abstention, reforms aren't gonna happen.

The news is right. All 4 should be independently admitted via a general assembly vote.

UNSC has veto. India and Japan do not deserve veto because they did not win in WW2.

Lol. India was a Victor in WW-2. It certainly contributed more troops and resources to the Allied effort that so-called victor France did. The French surrendered in a jiffy. And Vichy France was a willing Nazi ally. How it is considered a WW2 victor more than India which played a pivotal role in the Pacific sector defies logic.

India was not a country back then. It was part of Britain. I don't see Canada or Australia going for UNSC even though they both sacrificed a lot too o_O

Indians don't understand that none of the 5 bad guys wants to increase the veto powers in UNSC. For the rest reform of UN is open for discussion...:coffee:

All good things come to an end,we do understand the veto 5 dont want to give up their power, that dsnt mean we dont try .

The UNSC will be reformed in future if not in the near future, these are the building blocks for that, and we hope to take advantage when that happens.

Good,If we are dissing of chinese then things are going in the right direction instead of trying to win support from P5 members G4 should gangup and use their clout to bring around change.
