India's trade deficit with China has risen to more than $38 billion after three quarters of the year, on track to exceed last year's record $46 billion figure.

New data released by China's General Administration of Customs on Friday showed that bilateral trade had reached $62.48 billion after nine months of the year, up 20 per cent year-on-year.

India's exports to China were up by 41 per cent, but accounted for only $11.92 billion of the two-way trade.

Chinese exports to India have crossed $50 billion for the year, up by 16.5 per cent, driven by Indian demand for machinery and electrical equipment. India, by contrast, mainly exports raw materials to China. Iron ore has in recent years been the biggest export, while cotton is another fast-growing export commodity.

This year, bilateral trade has recovered after two years of slowing growth, in part driven by the rebound in the Chinese economy after recent slowing appetite for resources, and is on track to cross last year's $71.63 billion figure. Both countries had previously set an ambitious target of $100 billion by 2015.

Chinese officials said on Friday that trade overall was "sound and steady" due to "a strong Chinese economy", with China's exports overall up 12.4 per cent and imports up 22.3 per cent.

Among China's biggest trading partners, trade was up 18.7 per cent with the U.S., 16.4 per cent with the EU and 14.9 per cent with Japan.

No doubt, there is a need to curb the growing trade deficit. Good that India - China trade has stabilized at $70 billion since last 5 years. Unless there is a parity in trade, growth in trade figures will harm India more.

Not all the trade with china is bad, for example bulk ingredients for medicine is bought from them to create generics, which is then sold at a higher cost.
Issue is with electronic items which we need to start manufacturing at home. Again our exports are raw materials which is a big -ve. I think govt is looking at alternative sources of import.

Last 12 month deficit of India = 137 billion:

137 billion = GDP of Hungary.

India has structural problems and under modi, they are gone worse. But even worse part is that Modi's big mouth makes most of Indians feel they are still OK. Good for them and good for Pakistan. From our point of view, an unstable India is a better India and even though figures are showing a bleak picture of the state, Indians still think they are better off under Modi.

You are happy  believing Indians are foolish as they think they are better off under Modi.

We, Indians want to be happy for Pakistanis too.

Kindly do let let us know whether Pakistanis will think that they are better off under:
1. Abbasi
2. Nawaz Sharif
3. Zardari
4. Musharraf
5. Imran Khan
6. Maryam Safdar Sharif
7. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
OR New COAS

We will pray for the success of that leader and for your happiness :D

Pakistan is better of no matter which side you look at. Indian terrorism in Pakistan is beaten to death and every single terrorism tool you guys used to fund, back and support is in grave. Even Indian in-service army officer and RAW's country head is in our jail facing death - fantastic!

But even better part of this story is that this happened under super Modi and super Ajit Doval - who despite having a dog like big mouth are practically a big failure - and even better part of the story is that Indians are blind about it.

If Pakistan is better off than India in all respects then I am happy for you

But going through your post it seems that you are deriving your happiness more from the failures of Modi than the accomplishments of your leaders. :enjoy:

BTW pray for Modi to continue to remain in power in India for at least a decade. This way, both Indians and Pakistanis will be a happy lot. ;)

We need to replace Chinese pharma API and electronics with Indian production. Both are critical for the future of India and we can't rely on the Chinese for it.

. .
But when talking about other countries trade deficit with China you Indians say that China is destroying their economy.

Because trade growth has been growing fast and our deficit has been widening really fast. Had it not been checked, we wouldn't have been able to afford the deficit.
