India's projects in Afghanistan will strengthen bilateral relations - dnaindia.com

Jammu: Noting that there are cultural similarities between India and Afghanistan, Jammu and Kashmir governor NN Vohra today said the development projects being carried out by the country in the war-ravaged nation would help strengthening the bilateral relations.

"India is assisting Afghanistan in infrastructure building...India's relation with Afghanistan is embedded in commonalities in civilisational and cultural context. The historical relations between the two nations can not be thwarted by vested interests...," Vohra said at the concluding day of a three-day international conference in Jammu University.

The governor also dwelt on the factors and forces which had led to the birth of ISI and Taliban.

He said opposition to India's developmental projects in Afghanistan would have a negative impact on the regional peace
and stability.

Referring to the political situation in Pakistan, Vohra said the growing instability in the neighbouring country is a cause for concern to India.

India's interest lies in a stable Pakistan enjoying a peaceful relations with India, he said.

Its good to see India helps Afghanistan for the development of Infrastructure..

This project will cost 25m dollors and will be completed in 2 years(maybe in Oct 2011). It is a good move because Afghanistan is mostly dependant on agriculture and training more agronomists will be good for the future of the country.

What does India get in return? :)

Its Quite like China Making friends with Nepal or Srilanka.

What India Gets :

Poilitically - A Muslim Ally which is 100% Pro India.

Culturally : Since India and Afganistan share the old cultural ties ..its a revival of those relations.

More over Making Friends is always good isnt it?

^^^

A whining Pakistan...... LOL
IF you don't have a good answer for this, then you know there's only one other thing left for it to be.

There are two ways to prove thing. Either you prove the truthfulness of A. Or you prove that nothing but A can be the truth.

No money?

China sells hardware to Nepal and Sri Lanka for money. What does Afghanistan give you? :) What ALL does Afghanistan give? :)

The biggest benefit is that Afghans that know that Indians harbour no ill will against them and have lot of common culture will be less likely to become a haven for terrorists and anti-Indian militant groups as it was in the Taliban era. Main interest in this sense is security for the Indian public but reducing safe havens for extremists and improving economic situation by making it less likely for Afghans to fall into extremism.

You may be aware of the infamous plane hijacking in which Jaswant Singh had to escort some high profile terrorist to free Indian citizens in KAndahar. Moreover, many training camps for Kashmir centric groups were relocated in eastern Afghanistan post Kargil.

I think in the long term it would be good for Pakistan to as Afghan economy develops. At the end of the day we would expect Afghans to look after their interests first.

Bottom line India gets no MONEY out of it

The other thing you're saying is you're being nice to Afghanis so they don't attack you? As if India ever felt threatened by Afghanistan.

The fact that Pakistan gets Circled by Pro-Indian Establishments is above all.

Strategic Ties my friend.... Russia didnt place Nukes in Cuba for Money !

Pro india coz ::

During the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, India offered intelligence and other forms of support for the Coalition forces. After the overthrow of the Taliban, India established diplomatic relations with the newly-established democratic government, provided aid and participated in the reconstruction efforts.[3] India has provided USD 650-750 million in humanitarian and economic aid, making it the largest regional provider of aid for Afghanistan.[2][3] The Indian Army's Border Roads Organisation is constructing a major road in the remote Afghan province of Nimroz.[2][3] India's support and collaboration extends to rebuilding of air links, power plants and investing in health and education sectors as well as helping to train Afghan civil servants, diplomats and police. India also seeks the development of supply lines of electricity, oil and natural gas.[3]

Both nations also developed strategic and military cooperation against Islamic militants.[2] Owing to the killing of an Indian national by Taliban militants in November 2005, India deployed 200 soldiers of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to provide security for Indian nationals and the projects supported by India.[3] Afghanistan strengthened its ties with India in wake of persisting tensions and problems with Pakistan, which was suspected of continuing to shelter and support the Taliban.[2][3] India pursues a policy of close cooperation in order to bolster its standing as a regional power and contain its rival Pakistan, which it maintains is supporting Islamic militants in Kashmir and other parts of India.[3]

Three MoUs (memorandum of understanding) for strengthening cooperation in the fields of rural development, education and standardization between the Bureau of Indian Standards(BIS) and Afghan National Standardization Authority were signed between

India and Afghanistan during Hamid Karzai's visit to India during 9-13 April 2006.[8] An agreement providing $50 million to promote bilateral businesses between India and Afghanistan was signed during the visit of the Afghan Foreign Minister Dr. Spanta between June 29 and July 1, 2006.[8] During the same year, India raised its aid package to Afghanistan by $150 million, to $750 million.[8] India also supported Afghanistan's bid to become a member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).[8]

On July 7, 2008 the Indian embassy in Kabul was attacked by a suicide car bomb - the deadliest attack in Kabul since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.[9] The bombing killed 58 people[10] and wounded 141.[11] Senior Indian Army officer Brigadier Ravi Datt Mehta was entering the embassy gates in a car along with V. Venkateswara Rao when the attack took place. Both were killed in the blast.[11] The Afghan government had claimed that Pakistan's ISI was involved in the attack.

During the 15th SAARC summit in Colombo, India pledged another USD $450 million along with $750 million already pledged for ongoing and forthcoming projects. In August 2008, Afghan President Hamid Karzai visited New Delhi. This visit further strengthened bilateral relations, and Prime Minister Singh pledged further aid for Afghanistan.[12]

On October 18, 2009, the Indian Embassy in Kabul was attacked again by a car bomb, little more than a year after the previous attack. The attack killed at least 17 people.[13]

Why are you only talking about money? Americans have had a bad effect on you guys, they have given you money all the time and you evaluate every relationship based on handouts. And why should Afghanistan attack india? are they in such a position to do so? and even if they are in this position why shoud they attack india?
