DRDO’S Dornier Do-228 TEST BED
Last Year, idrw.org (Read : India’s Indigenous Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Processing well : Report ) was first to report that India’s Indigenous Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) developed by DRDO’s Electronics & Radar Development Establishment (LRDE) for Unmanned Aerial vehicle (UAVs) was reportedly progressing well and may be flight tested by end of 2016 or early 2017 from a modified Dornier Do-228 which will act as flying test bed (FTB) for the program ,
According to information provided to idrw.org, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) with ground moving target indicator (GMTI) capability for the air-borne sensor in UAV for imaging, surveillance and reconnaissance have completed all required flight trials successfully.
SAR is capable of detecting slow moving target such as armoured tanks, convoys, trucks etc and will be used on Tapas-201 (RUSTOM–II) Medium-altitude long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle.
Indigenous Synthetic Aperture Radar has proved all algorithm developed for it and the system was extensively tested with 40 functional sorties, comprising of 60 Flying hours.
LRDE’s SAR will be lightweight and feature a modular and open architecture system, which can be configured for a broad range of installations for applications on-board unmanned aircraft. The radar will be able to perform Wide Area Search with very high resolutions for stationary and as well as for moving targets. LRDE is also planning to develop a derivative of this radar for operations from manned reconnaissance aircraft.
